The guys who (arguably) started it all

Two young French sailors on a little plywood boat, sailing deep into the Southern Ocean at the beginning of the 1970s

Particularly striking iceberg at the end of the clip - talk about majestic!

Re: The guys who (arguably) started it all

The DVD is re-available at the moment (10 copies left, 15 sold, one to me!)

The English commentary is hard to listen to; even by French standards of the seventies, Gérard was inclined to philosophise and use very flowery and poetic turns of phrase... which is bearable, even cute, in French, but doesn't translate well
(and the English translation is read by an educated and earnest nicely-spoken Englishman, which just makes it more incongruous)

For all that it's an absolute must-see for anyone interested in polar navigation, even in English.

Good pictures, but it emphasises how remarkable was the journey of David Lewis in 1964 in a plywood catamaran with his family including two young children, round the horn and around the world.
