One of my personal favorites is that the Bush administration orchestrated the 9-11 attacks. (That one is true, by the way. I saw a video on the internet that proves it).

We seem to be hard-wired to believe what we want to believe, either ignoring science or distorting it to conform to our beliefs.
Yeah, the internet is a double-edged sword. (Maybe not-so-remarkably, given the inherent natural capitalism of human nature, shortly after Gutenberg's invention there was much concern about the somewhat dubious uses to which the technology was being put. It's hard not to look at the internet as 'Gutenberg for the 21st century'...[leaving out, of course, the rather oxymoronically named, 'smart' phone and its' ilk]). I've been threatening myself to start a thread asking 'How do you determine your sources' reliability?' or 'What do you 'trust' and why?' or maybe just 'Who do you believe?', but have so far resisted the temptation (or is that 'lacked the gumption?')...

With all due respect, What multiyear ice? After 2010, as seen in the loop below, there is essentially no multiyear (over 4 years old) ice left.

The CRAAP test is a good tool to use to assess sources.

Maybe if you squint really hard, and think the last 40 years matter in the long run of thousands of years.

You could start by learning to read a graph.

BTW the recent RSS trend for the lower troposphere:

Did you notice the trend in the increasing number of yachts and other vessels transiting the NWP? That is the thread topic.

Yeah, more people on a fool's errand. One I plan to undertake myself. This has nothing to do with "global warming" and more to do with people with a sense of adventure. The point?

As for the "increasing temperatures" 40 years, does not a climate make.
Stop panicking, and wake up. We are not going to get much hotter. CO2 is not a major greenhouse gas, as it has doubled, and the temperature has remained about the same. We are recovering from a cold period, and a single major volcanic eruption would drop the global temp a few degrees C and kill millions of people, as it has in the past. What don't you get, cold is bad, warm is not.

On another front it looks to me that the nwp is rapidly closing for the year.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread, but you bring up a very valid point. If a natural resource is truly in danger, then why would we want to trample on it and create inroads to speed things up.

Kind of like driving a bulldozer across farm land being lost to erosion. Just doesn't make sense.

BTW, I'm not taking sides and I know what a scientific theory is and they are fairly solid until new proofs come along and change it.

I'm not worrying of thousands of years, just twenty and some left to live and sail (best case scenario) so yes, the last 40 years matter to me.
Unlike you suggest, there's no panicking. Instead just regognising the facts how matters are changing today. Not in very remote future we can sail directly from Norway to Bering strait without hugging the arctic shores

Re: Northwest Passage - 2016

These so called "novice" sailors refereed by the Westerners have successfully crossed PW passage and they arrived Ilulissat, Greenland yesterday.

Shaun on the left has sailed around the world solo a few years ago through Cape Hope and Cape Horn. After this voyage, he is still a damn newbie.

But it might make somebody rich. Like the CEO of an Oil Company or shipping company, for instance.

Some how I completely forgot about this comment when I made my reply, and just remembered reading it.
Quite simply depends on where you mean is set.
EG the other mean, the one that is not so below the line.

Re: Northwest Passage - 2016

Southern NWP remains virtually ice free, as seen in the satellite view from yesterday, below. Note also that M'Clure and Prince of Wales straits, on the western end, are also open, with broken ice only obstructing a small section in the middle central western third...
