Need a vessel that can travel in polar regions!

Hello!

I am looking for a sailboat that is suitable in the polar regions (Antarctic regions).

I live in Norway, and here I need a boat that can withstand some ice and are well insulated.

Could well be a vessel that needs renovation.

Hoping for an answer!

Having been berated in other threads for disliking Steel. Here is a perfect occasion for me to say. Steel would be the perfect hull material for arctic regions. If I was going to bump into ice on any boat, I would like to have steel underneath me. The same goes for when hammering ice off the deck, stauntions etc. Insulation and condensation levels will be design dependent of course.

How many people as regular crew? Any kids?
Sailing experience?
What's your budget to buy and outfit the boat? (living and cruising costs extra.)
Are you looking to cruise extensively or liveaboard and occasionally take several weeks or months off to nip up north and play in the ice?
Any really strong preferences to start with? (full/fin keel, spade/skeg/attached rudder, sloop/cutter/mizzen rigged)

the boat will be used as the expedition boat. I know that the hull must be steel, but not all vessels of steel which is suitable for expeditions and extreme sailing.

The crew is going to be 6 or 7.

I struggle and find a boat that is suitable and to help to find the right boat.

It doesn't have to be steel, aluminum could work or even a very stoutly built fiberglass.

For that many people 50' would be about right, though you could go as short as 40' if the interior is laid out right and the voyage length is fairly short since you need storage space for provisions proportional to the number of people and duration of trip.

Wood would fit the bill, and your in the right part of the world to to get the right boat for the job. Danish and Norwegian fishing boats have a long history of working in polar conditions.
This is one that was built for what you intend- ARVED FUCHS EXPEDITIONEN

They are built incredibly strong.

People have successfully cruised polar regions in all sorts of vessels, but a steel or aluminium hull is much more impact resistant.
Have a look at the aluminium yacht for some good ideas.

Oh, it is such a pity David Lewis's "Ice Bird" is out of print. If you can find a copy I absolutely recommend you read it.

Westerly Discus made a journey like that, it's available in the 'Westerly Story'. Up the coast of Greenland if I recall, story was Discus into the ice or something like that, google it.
