The scientific process worked.

An attractive theory was developed, published prematurely, subjected to minute scrutiny, and fairly quickly (for science) shown to be seriously in error. The supermarket tabloids may have all climbed aboard cold fusion; science did not.

To those who genuinely doubt that human activity is and will materially affect the Earth's climate... hey, that's ok. There happen to be a thousand other good reasons why we should consume resources more carefully, make less of a mess, and maybe plan for the future. Pick any reason you like for doing the right thing. Virtue is it's own reward?
In all seriousness, there were a number of highly publicized press conferences held, GTRI and SRI to name a few high profile labs. They announced with great fanfare that "we are getting the same results." It seemed like this regularly occurred up to 6 month later.

I did not check Wikipedia on this but it sounds like from your comments that history is being shaded with the benefit of hindsight. It was all highly embarrassing in the end.

I remember those high-profile press conferences. Many notable physicists wasted no time in pouring cold water on cold fusion. The media may have chosen to ignore them, but it doesn't mean those voices weren't out there.

When I was writing for the AP many years ago, I did a short stint on the science desk. One of the stories I wrote was about the claim by a team in Scotland (if I remember) that they had detected the first "reflected light" from an extrasolar planet. I did my due diligence and spoke to other people in the field of extrasolar planet searches and they expressed skepticism. So, I wrote the story, with plenty of qualification. Others (including Reuters) wrote the story like it was a breakthrough. Guess whose story got more play?

A few months later, the skepticism proved well founded when the Scottish team retracted.

So ... what I'm trying to say is that the media does a generally lousy job of reporting on science. More often than not, this misconceptions result from that.

Re: Global Warming Opens Up Antarctic Waterways

NASA- National Aeronautics and Space Administration
NOAA- National Ocean and Administration
DOE- Department of Energy
You forgot the EPA Environmental Protection Administration

All of these are BIASED and the money comes from the same pot. They want the additional tax money and the Royalties from selling the Cap and Trade. They are also into the solar panel business, the wind generator business, and the electric car business and giving out research grant money. Do you have another point that isn't biased and stinks from the far left.

Are we reading the same thread? Where are the skeptics who might be interested in what NOAA has to say?

The first three fund the research of Dr Roy Spencer, an AGW denier.

I'm being serious too - and I was a young physics geek when the cold-fusion thing went down. Yes there was media hype when whatsisname and Pons made their announcement, but the physics community did not rush onside, they got to work... and, rather quickly for science, they pretty clearly showed the flaws in the presented work.

That's how science works. The scientific process is the best system we have for advancing knowledge and finding the truth, with checks and balances and peer review, to minimise the effects of bias and flawed work.

It's both ridiculous and sad that the dominant argument against the near unanimous findings of AGW is an ad hominem attack on scientists. As if Science Inc was just another self-interested for-profit corporation, just down the hall from Exxon.

Yes....it IS exactly that....thanks for the comparison, then throw in some income inequality hype, followed by a little spice of anticapitalism, and a dash of socialism....bingo, the perfect witches brew of lies. How do you think these "scientists" pay their bills? Sheesh....some poeple are pretty blind to the way real science works.

Savoir you need to be careful. Al Gore wants to round up people like you in put you in a re-education camp. Don't you realize that the US Department of Defence gas named global warming as a greater danger than terrorists. Be very careful because with the nutty and dangerous talk going on these days you could be targeted for special treatment.

Re: Global Warming Opens Up Antarctic Waterways

Besides Africa and the Middle East, there are two places on Earth I never wish to go sailing. They both include the word "arctic".

Lots of ice, cold water, not much to see, and many big animals, both in the water and out, that like eating things.

No thanks!

Well sir, you call yourself a scientist on occasion, yet I suspect you are in fact an engineer and a businessman...and very good at both I suspect, and absolutely no shame in that.

So I can understand your confusion re 'scientists'.
