Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

Thanks for the book, Ben.

I've managed to read as far South as 55 deg., this morning. I'll finish later when home from work.

Cheers, Steve

Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

I want to thank you very much for the offer of the book for free, but like someone else said, I don't need another app that is going to increase my clutter with more adds so I am going to help increase your father's wealth by a few cents and order it from Amazon.

Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

Thanks. I just downloaded and quickly perused it. Looks like it'll be a good read and I'll be sure to submit a review to both Kobo and Amazon (on their site for 5.99). Incidentally, the Kobo app is good to have on your phone or tablet. I primarily use a Kindle, but sometimes books are cheaper on Kobo, in which case I read it on my iPhone or Ipad app.

Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

Good one, Ben, thanks.

For those of you who don't know Ben, we were at one of his early public presentations for the local ham radio club, a while after he returned from his trip to Antarctica. Many of the hams there were also sailors, and a good time was had by all.

Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

Hi Ben,

Well, Kobo defeated me in the long run, so I'll either wait for an offer on another platform or buy it. I remember well meeting you at the ham club somewhere in Hobart, and being quite impressed with your presentation. You were but a snot-nosed kid at the time, making the voyage and the presentation all the more exemplary! Seems a long time ago...

Meanwhile, looking forward to reading the book one way or another. And are your folks ever coming back to Bruny Island? It's always nice to see NZ Maid bobbing around the area.

Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

One of the great things about Kobo is that the device itself works with a number of formats, including the good old fallback of PDF. I borrow books from my library in Adobe EPub format using the Kobo which saves the whole stress of remembering to return them in time.

For those with PCs or Macs, Kobo make a free application to access their online store.

https://www.kobo.com/au/en/p/desktop for the Australian version. Google Kobo Desktop for the others.

There’s also a free app for the iPhone on the App Store. Don’t have an android device but I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t support there too.

In short, Kobo produced an exceptionally open platform that is well worth the the effort of installing or purchasing the hardware. I have both the Kobo and the Kindle and I find the Kindle prices from Amazon are usually fractionally lower but I will never purchase enough books to make up the price difference.

Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

Thanks a lot for making this available for free, Jon (and Ben)!

I did jump through the hoops and freshly downloaded the app for MacOS. After the installation it advised me to "update the app"... hmm, ok, another 70MB download. Glad I didn't try that while I was on 4G.
On the second start, I still can't read the book (yet) as it is downloading some "dictionaries". Not giving up hope just yet, but I think I'll stick with my Kindle for other ebooks that are available there...

Re: Free Ebook 'Snow Petrel'

^^ I had no real issues downloading it onto my Android phone, though it didn't seem as easy as the kindle app. The Andriod app was about 35 Mb and the book was 7 mb due to the large number of pictures in it.

I'll have a go with the PC version of kobo at some stage. The library download option sounds good.

Hi Ben, great offer for people who have not read about your great trip.
I have the " real book" sitting on my book shelf, and love to pull it out and have another flick through every now and then.
Of course , being a previous owner of her, does give me a special interest in the story!
Any idea where she is now?
Cheers
Graeme

Hi Graeme, My brother owns her. She is back in tassie. Renamed Honu and painted green. She certainly is a simple, solid and dependable boat. I am glad you got a copy of the real book. Where abouts in NZ are you these days, might get over next year, hopefully be in Nelson at some point.

Cheers Ben
