Evidence of Viking Presence in Notre Dame Bay

New evidence of Jasper fire starters used by the Vikings confirms earlier evidence that they explored the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland 143 miles south of L'Anse Aux Meadows in the area of Notre Dame Bay and undoubtedly made contact with the natives--an area heavily populated by the indigenous Beothuk people. Newfoundland is quickly becoming a world class historic site for the first documented New World contact with Europe. Follows is the excellent article. www.livescience.com/37189-new-viking-voyage-discovered...

I do find it interesting, but then I keep my boat on Notre Dame Bay, at Lewisporte.

Salty,

Great link. No hoopla "may have happened" stuff, just telling what has been found. I like it that we keep pushing back the times of colonizations, and confirming human wanderlust, and searching for new food places. So little remains of antiquity.

And yet schools keep teaching our children that Columbus discovered America in 1492. Ironic isn't it.

I wouldn't say wrong. It's based on best evidence, when better evidence is discovered and substantiated it will be taught. Like s in Newfoundland, it took a while to be proven.

Don't know what school your children are going to, but the one my daughter attended was teaching 20 years ago that the Vikings were most likely the first Europeans to visit North America.

A lot of history is re-written as new discoveries are made. Unfortunatly, history is also highly subject to political and prejudicial influences.

What's REALLY unfortunate is that pre-history is subject to those same influences! So our desire for understanding of our ancestors is always threatened by opinions, just like threads on CF!

As the old saying goes, history is written by the victors.

Re: Evidence of Viking Presence in Notre Dame Bay

An interesting addendum to this story are the newly discovered hunting pits in Sop's Arm, Newfoundland which are to the South of L'Anse Aux Meadows and to the north of Notre Dame Bay on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland. I described this in a previous post: Second Viking Site in Newfoundland. As the story unfolds with further archeological research, the picture will be quite clear concerning the importance of Newfoundland in the European discovery/exploration of America.

Nice paper here on the interpretation of the sagas, Vinland and the hunting pits in Sops Arm.

Re: Evidence of Viking Presence in Notre Dame Bay

I think i read some where in the spring that there is another confirmed viking settlement on Baffin Island. Also have seen some odd ruins in Labrador and a huge standing stone in Hebron Labrador so would expect they were all over the eastern Seaboard and probably up the St. Lawrence river.
