Re: Boat for polar cruising

A serious bit of kit then, nice.
Been reading about willy Kerr who has done all the high latitudes in a standard (ish) contessa 32. Interesting stuff. Was wondering how much ice is actually about in the 'perfect' weather window?

Raw unpainted aluminum is the way to go. Aluminum like teak are best left untreated unless of course you enjoy spending time and money on visual upkeep.

Steel on the other hand will corrode quickly if not protected from the salt water but the correct aluminum alloy like 5086 and 5083 have no problems with it after an initial oxide is formed within hours of sanding.

If this boat had been available when I went to Port San Luis looking for aluminum boats I would have purchased it on the spot. You can't buy the aluminum for what they are selling this boat for. It is a bit shorter than mine but not significantly plus it has some interesting features that mine does not.

If you are truly interested in polar exploration this would be a boat worth going over to see. IMHO
