Re: Need Advice on Hiring Delivery Captain

Check my profile on cf. I do this trip so many times, its almost my "milk run". I'm doing Ft Lauderdale to bvi next week but have some time available in January. You can pm me on cf.

When someone indicates "reasonable fair rate" in their post it always makes me wonder what they consider reasonable and fair as it sounds like they've not liked some rates quoted. I'm not one interested or capable of doing the job, just wondering how those words translate to you. The delivery and day captains I know charge a minimum of $300/day plus expenses and extra for any crew required. Does that fit your definition?

Re: Need Advice on Hiring Delivery Captain

Hi Jeff,
I'm just the man you're looking for. I've been sailing for the past 30 years and have been delivering yachts professionally for the past 3 years. In order to quote I need a few details about the boat. Type, length, age, equipment etc. I'd be happy to take you and your wife along and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Jon Ford

Re: Need Advice on Hiring Delivery Captain

JUDYFOOD's reply was spot on. As a delivery Captain myself (100 ton, retired Naval Officer, retired airline pilot, yada, yada) I couldn't agree more that the owner must do his/her homework when looking for a Captain. I use a basic contract with all my clients and modify it as necessary. One of the things that always amazes me is how hung up on $$ many owners are when it comes to a delivery. When I discuss a potential job I make absolutely certain the owner understands that I will deliver their boat as expeditiously as humanly possible but will not sacrifice the safety of either crew or the boat to meet a schedule. Lots of other considerations, most of which have been addressed but don't forget to talk to your insurance company to ensure the Captain you hire is listed on your policy for the expected duration of the delivery. Good luck!
