I concur with this.
Sexual orientation is usually not an issue; usually not even known. Unless you bring up the topic, very few will be interested in this part of your personal life.

Re: Gay male crew member
Scooby, leave your gayness on the curb, stick to the main road.
Get STCW basic training.
Then if going on deck route: Powerboat Level II (RYA) Maybe Scuba, and other watersports certs, Jetski, etc.
If going on service side, you have Steward, or Housekeeping. Stew will get you as far as Chief Stew, who sometimes controls housekeeping. There, you will need some service oriantated quals, like wine knowlege, silver service, etc...
Your sexual orientation will have no negative effect, and might even help you. But do NOT base the whole career change on that. The yachting industry is very professional, if you do base it on your sexuality, you are looking in the wrong place, maybe a job as a fluffer in a dungeon would be more interesting.
There are tons of Megayacht/Superyacht pages on Facebook. "Crew Helping Crew" "Palma Yacht Crew" and many more.
We know the industry well, trust me, moenie kak praat nie, stick to the primary motivation...you will find love and friends within the industry, but only wave that rainbow flag after hours.

As Gilana posted, no one aboard a boat really cares what your sexual preference is...unless you make it an issue. Ive had gay male & female crew, as long as they are competent and respectful of others who cares.

With a very few exceptions I've seen this is my experience and personal opinion as well.

Re: Gay male crew member
Hi Scoobyroo, I hear you and agree with most of the above replies, sailing is a wonderful, wonderful lifestyle, and I would certainly encourage you to become qualified and get as much experience as you can... You don't mention where you are based? That may help your situation...are you looking to cruise around long term, or perhaps working on a charter boat, and where would you want to be based?? You may want to include these details to improve your chances good luck

Re: Gay male crew member
To be a deckhand you don't need certifications/licenses per se but for paid positions some level of experience will be expected and some classes will help you get there, VHF/Radio operator is an important one, a basic power boating course so you have some idea of what everything is, etc.
To find jobs there is a site called crewseekers.net. Paid positions are not often listed but sometimes are, it is mainly for yacht owners looking for crew to help with passages or deliveries and can be a great place to get some experience that you can put on a CV. If you are anywhere near a marina servicing large yachts you may be able to buy a few beers and get some pointers on what their captains are looking for in paid crew. I have found the crews on most of the larger boats I've encountered to be friendly and always willing to chat over a beer or two.

I am 100% with Franziska on this.

Ever since boating folk of any gender look for compatibility in a sailing partner!
IOW, since forever...

A very great many of posts have been deleted here. Some were rude, some were thread hijacks, and some, merely referred to deleted posts. CF's rules forbid thread hijacking.

Re: Gay male crew member
For the OP:
There is a lot of competition for paid crew positions. You are not likely to find one here; crew positions here are 99% unpaid, and usually crew actually participates in some of the expenses.
To get into the "business", you will need to build up some experience and figure out how it works. I'm afraid the folks here will not likely be much help; we are amateurs and don't generally hire paid crew.
As to your sexual orientation -- as others have said, this is not likely to either help or hurt you much. Kudos to you for being up front about it, but few people are likely to care much in my experience. I've had gay crew (both male and female) on my boat; it was never any issue whatsoever. What counts is helpfulness and a good attitude. Only one crew on my boat in all these years was ever paid for it, though -- and he was a skilled engineer.
You'd be welcome on my boat, but you'd be paying me, and not vice versa

I don't mind starting at the bottom and have many qualifications and traits that might prove beneficial to the operation of the vessel.
