Lots of ideas here. Different styles, different levels of comfort for security. I can't tell any captain or any crew what they should look for in a yacht or captain, but I can point to this discussion to suggest the variety. Each will have to make their best guess at that point.

Sooo, if I were going to crew on a boat would I be wise to take into account the type of construction, wood vs. plastic, steel vs. aluminum, does it make any difference in my safety? What if we were heading to the Antarctic?

I remember before most of your day, they were concerned plastic boats would fall apart in the salty ocean so they poured the hulls extra thick. None of them fell apart.

Being crew is a lot like hitching rides in cars.......and much the same for the Skipper.

The chance to take a few more precautions though, but that up to each to bother.

IMO type of construction irrelevant - it's all about boat condition, albeit likely that some types attract those with differing budgets - including for maintenance........but just like getting in a car with a stranger, the best tool yer can have is a nose. Some folks have that, some get buried by the side of a deserted highway..........

Why look at type of construction? Should just check to see if things are well maintained and have a few drinks with the skipper to see if there is recklessness.

it is not the boat that will get you to where you wish to go. it is the idiot driving that boat that will get you to where you wish to be.
that idiot/loose nut/captain/skipper/wtf will not take you into their home /boat if you are not worthy. not worthy includes failure to follow simple instructions. it includes personal habits such as leaving on the lights and flooding boat by not paying attention to how to flush a marine manual toilet. btw--you plug the damn thing, you fix it....

there are many issues that are subjective, and many that are objective. sort thru the bs and see what you have found. some crew are treasures, some are not.

I'd hate her to move about and spoil the view...
