Re: Sumatran Cruise

Hi Keith

How far is the boat from the place where you go surfing? How well protected?

Keep typing man!

Re: Sumatran Cruise

Cheers Glenn, Dirkdog and Cap'n Morgan.
Lovely surf again today, but having a late start!
The anchorage is superb, sheltered from all the stormy winds and squalls that come from the East, Ne, W, NW and SW.
Good holding, in 6m with sandy bottom, about 200m off from the beach and within 10 mins paddling distance from the right hand break. 40 secs by fast dingy. My friend, Dale, from the cat Zinc, has tied chain around the reef, with a buoy, that we tie the dingies to. Except, when the swell is above 2m, then I anchor the dingy in 15m of water.
It is a bay called Lagundri, anchored deep in the bay. A bit rolly when the swell is up.
Here is a pic, posted before..

There is a large town, called Teluk Dalam, about 15 kms east from here, can get all the supplies by bemo, for 7k rupiah , one way.
Cheers from Keith.

Was riding the 6'10" little pig in the morn and the 8'8" weapon of wave destruction in the second 8 hr session. Caught and made 21 big waves in the second session, fell off 2 others as too deep and had a drop in!

Saw, maybe 70 long tube rides by other surfers as i was sitting or paddling out.
Best day of surf I have ever seen!! Only 2.3m at 16 seconds, sometimes gets to 4.2m at 18 seconds, then goes like mini taepho??

Very daunting and scary waves!! they seemed impossible to make, but the legends would pull in, hands in the air and stand tall in a swirl of foam and spray and come out the end, everyone screaming and hooting, right from the take off to the end.

Whenever I paddled for one they would all start screaming and hooting and yelling, "go keith..go surfmachine yeehaaaaa!!", and off I would go!!! Best and biggest barrel my brazillian friend got on video, sitting in the channel.
An absolutely priceless experience!

Damo cooked dinner on the boat. Two eggs on toast, pumpkin chips in butter and salt and pepper, and then two big slabs of mahi mahi cooked in butter and lime juice. Mmmmmmm!!!
Damnit man.........

Re: Sumatran Cruise

Surfmachine sails from Nias island to mainland Sumatra, for a new 30 day visa and reprovisioning. Returns to Nias at 1200 hrs 17th Sept, as the swell is too small in the Banyaks all this coming week.
Check out the pictures of life ashore on Sibolga, Sumatra.
Cheers from Keith.

Re: Sumatran Cruise

Whurl...Nomadgurl.... It has it moments, like being held under the surf for two waves, about 15 to 18 seconds, pinned to the coral!! But it is very addictive and keeps me youngish?
Just departed good old Sibolga and have a 19 hour passage to Lagundri bay, on Nias. Sailing solo.
Wind is nice, 11k from the West, so maybe some sailing when I clear the islands and fall off a bit? Through the coral reef in the light and make landfall about dawn tomorrow.
Cheers from Keith.
