Suez Canal Transit Costs

Anyone have information on costs to transit the Suez Canal (northbound) for a 16 meter sailboat, 24 net tons? Recommend particular agent to use? If so, contact info?

For a 70' Cat the following (in USD):

Suez canal transit dues - $3611
Port disbursement - $311
Port clearance - $128
Agent fees - $300
Insurance - $50
Immigration (arrival and departure) - $50
Customs fees - $50

Total: $4500 USD

This did not include the pilot and harbour bribes which were another $150.

Just as a warning to anyone with a Catamaran, they charge on "Volume" not weight.

For a 16 metre monohull sailboat you are looking at around $3,720 total including bribes

That's a huge difference. A 38ft. cat went through several months ago at the total cost of $650.00. Of course he had to put up a fee of $800.00 on top of that, but that was returned? Has there been an increase, or is it just the difference in boats?........i2f

Understand the 70ft cat charges were listed in a recent Noonsite report ( taken at face value) One would need to speak directly to an agent to get a number (which may not in the end be accurate)

We have the total fees somewhere, but we did it very cheaply!

Nic in her writing on it that is on our website:

"Our total cost to transit for our 11.62 m long, 1.8 m draft, Beneteau monohull was:
$200 USD measurer fee, i.e Transit fee
$70 agent fee (was $80 but he gave us a discount),
$40 port clearance fee,
$20 passport clearance out fee.
So in total our transit fees were - $330 USD (or 1881 Egyptian pounds at the time).
We also had to pay for 2 nights on the mooring (as we were told we were not allowed to anchor). That was $21 per night for our 11.62 m length (or 252 Le).
We also had to tie up in a med style berth at Ismalia for the night half way through the transit so that was another $21 USD for the night (or at an exchange rate of 5.5 – 115.50 Le).
So with the mooring fees added on we spent $393 USD (or 2248.5 Le).
We gave each pilot $10 USD but in Egyptian pounds and a little koala. No cigarettes, no t-shirts, no hats etc etc. "

Witht he earier post of the $4500 transit you must remember that if you come into Egypt thinking you need to pay $150 bribes not only will you, but every other fee will be vastly higher too.

Obviosuly the 70 foot Cat paid too much... far too much.

Just stick it out and say NO to all requests for bribes from the boat boy to the highest official. and if you get a rediculous transit fee just say no and order them to reasses them, then complain to the government. If the mooring is 'only $21 per night theres lots of nights between $0 and $4500

Also NEVER clear out of Pt Said, clear out at Suez and transit through after clearing out.

Egypot will steal ALL your money if you let them. Its their national sport.

I have been reading posts on transiting the Suez canal. There was a series of container ships taken hostage, a few years back, by Somali Pirates. Has anyone had problems of this nature in smaller boats exiting on a North South run through the Suez Canal? Is anyone aware of a link to monitor security in this area?

If you search the forum you'll find a lot on the subject. There have been very public kidnapping and a search of CF or the web will give you lots of info. You could try noonsite as well. The ICC keeps commercial statistics but doesn't monitor pleasure traffic.

I passed the canal in january 2014 with a Belize 43 from Fountaine Pajot, a 13m long 7m wide sailing catamaran.
Total cost: 600 US$ everything but personal visa costs (25$ pp) and bribes (150$) included. If we come back within 6 months and do not leave Egypt, we do not have to pay the canal dues: 423$
Egypt is special (as is the rest of Africa) but when you stay calm and keep a smile on your face, it's great. Egyptians are very kind. Try to get in the slow rhythm if you come from a western country, relax.

Bill and judy why not contact albert and sheena or S/Y dream provider they came out last yr and are heading back this yr have a look on his face book page there is a link in his posting on here for a trip he is organizing and if any one is planning on going you wont go wrong if you go with them if memory serves me correctly it cost them around $650 for there yacht 16m they also used felix agency

Great choice of boat, bet it just slipped comfortably through that old canal.
Seems like a reasonable fee considering the alternative. Where are you heading for?
