keep your flea powder handy!

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/476580...om-madagascar/

PLAGUE warnings have been issued for NINE countries surrounding Madagascar amid fears the disease could spread via sea trade and flight routes.

The outbreak is considered a much bigger threat to the region than in previous years because it has taken on its pneumonic form - meaning it is airborne and spread by sneezing and coughing.

Re: keep your flea powder handy!

the WHO are taking this outbreak very seriously as the plague has mutated to airborne infection in many cases

antibiotics i think are the standard treatment, that is until it mutates again and becomes resistant to antibiotics.

these plague epidemics happen every year in madagasgar with the onset of the rainy and cyclone season,so nothing unusual there, but what is unusual is the fact that the disease has mutated from being largely carried by paracites or rodents ie fleas and rats,to becoming pneumonic ie airborne, and transmitted directly human to human without needing an insect or animal vector in 90% of the cases of death in the recent outbreak.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneumonic_plague

this is highly concerning to the WHO as antibiotics become more resistant to infectious disease, such as this which is endemic, and a yearly occurance

If this is Bubonic Plague, yes there are inoculations for it.
It was one of many shots I got in the Army for diseases I thought extinct.
If memory serves, Yellow Fever, Dengue Fever, Typhus, full Anthrax series, Cholera, Diphtheria.
Others I’m sure, just don’t remember.

not entirely safe!,and not commercially available vaccine for plague currently

The live attenuated vaccine containing strain Yersinia pestis EV is used for plague immunization. Attenuated vaccines have some advantages and disadvantages. They typically provoke more durable immunological responses and are the preferred type for healthy adults. But they may not be safe for use in immunocompromised individuals, and may rarely mutate to a virulent form and cause disease.[

I kind of think the US Military has a history of administering possibly unsafe vaccines. However it’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Just me if I’m going to an area with Bubonic Plague, I want the vaccine, I’ll take my chance. We were however on the whole pretty young, and pretty fit compared to average.
I went through the entire Anthrax vaccine when I was at Ali Al Salem in Kuwait, then right after they stopped immunization due to reasons unknown.

gulf war syndrome was one of the side effects of these mass vaccination programs of service personel.

like antibiotic resistance,GMO's,etc there is the danger of opening a pandoras box of little understood long term effects when messing with immunosuppresion of viral and bacterial vectors that will come back and bite the human race in the ass in the future,as nature restores natural harmony

worrying ,when we lived in the comores, every november majunga and other ports in madagasgar would be closed because of pest borne bubonic plague, but pneumonic plague is a whole another level, with large 3rd world impoverished populations nearby, especially vunerable are your large refugee and migrant populations in the middle east on europe's southern borders

Re: keep your flea powder handy!

Sorry, I take back my earlier statement, I just rechecked the facts. The Seychelles guy died while still in Madagascar and all suspected cases here have come back negative.

Here's a link. The same bacteria produces three manifestations of plague. The link is to the CDC's for travelers. There are a number of different antibiotics which can be used to treat it. You might want to carry some in the ships medicine chest that you know you can tolerate.

In another thread on here I read the Gulf Stream might be switching off, but this is a real concern.

From what I know (which is little) treatment is easy (antibiotics as you said), it's the speed at which this thing can kill that is the problem. Also 100% fatality if not treated.
My partner flew out tonight, this may be paranoia but she took antibiotics with her as she'll be travelling for thirty hours.
It's also the time of year when quite a few boats are on the west coast of Madagascar crossing to South Africa.

Re: keep your flea powder handy!

Of course there is also Bubonic plague in LA, or is it SF. Don't they often find it in squirrels. Think it's pretty common in Yosemite too.

Antibiotics should do the trick. Of course if you are from the UK you've got no chance of your doctor getting you some 'just in case'
