The problem with most modern crime situations is that the motive becomes the defense.

Somali fishermen cannot earn a living
Somalia has a broken society
Outside people allegedly are dumping waste (toxic or otherwise) in Somali waters
Hungry and desperate people will do almost anything to survive. The same as greedy wealthy people will do almost anything to maintain their status.

Ok - My mod hats off and if one of the mods wants to delete this (amnd possibly my other post), I am OK with it because technically we might be talking politics.

However Somali pirates are a big issue for cruisers so maybe they will allow a little lattitude.

Ghandi - peacefully protested oppression for years and changed a country

Mandela - Peacefully protested an outrage for years, went to jail as a martyr and changed a country and the world

Neither one of these gentleman rounded up some followers hopped in a boat and started stealing ships and killing innocent people.

Sorry - I will never buy any argument that says terrorism is justified because people are hungry.

Can't go there at all...

Somalia and some other African nations need visionary, selfless, leadership to change generations of tribal conflict, illogical border divisions, anarchy and despotism.

To hint that crime against 3rd parties is justified because of societal breakdown is ludicrous on it's face.

I didn't get the impression that's what he was doing....I think he was just stating the facts, not justifying them.

Gettin' a little trigger happy there cowboy......

I can see no useful purpose to the CF Community in JackDale's post or additional responses. Such posts are merely antagonistic and increase the BS Coefficient of this Forum to no good end. If people wish to discuss/theorize/debate such matters there are social/political forums for that purpose and I encourage those that wish to pursue such issues to go there.
I was thinking the same thing. Politics and boating is really what the article was all about. It was pointless.

I certainly don't condone what is going on or claim that it is justified. I'm simply stating that when people are hungry and desperate they will do what they feel is necessary to survive. Not everyone of course. I believe that most people live by spiritual principals that allow them to overcome great adversity. But when you have a people living in a country with no functional central government, a country wracked by war for years, where their fishing industry (their main source of protein) has been decimated by outside interests, it is quite likely anarchy will reign. It is quite likely that most people in that situation feel totally abandoned by the rest of the world.

And instead of hunger, think Starvation, desperation, sickness and fear and then cast judgment on what is or is not justified.

Because I want to go there and I don't want to succumb to a bunch of crooks at the entrance.

I want to do the Med from East to West so Nic can get a feeling of the history and culture from the beginning of civilization:

Egypts Pyramids and Alexandria's lighthouse, the lands of religious turmoil that so affect our lives, Turkey with Ephusus, Rhodes - another of the 7 wonders.
(I am already missing the
HangingGardens of Babylon...)

Then as we move west to modern western culture,
Greace, Italy, France and Spain.

I am not going to be hostage to a could of crooks at the doorway. So by keeping up to date with current affairs hopefully we can work a safe way. (I'll prolly just pay off a Chineese battleship to ride shot gun They can't even speak the language to ask questions before shooting )

Also, yes, I would love to do the
Indian Ocean, but it may have to be on the second lap

Mark

I live in the north of Yemen but make very frequent visits to Aden.
If/when you decide to go up the red sea...I can help with some wheels in Aden.

I also know some people at the coast guard...for what its worth.

Being a boating forum means we are not a politcal forum. The last Red Sea Priate thread is already locked. This one is too.

Political discussions belong on another forum on another web site.
