Indonesia back to Australia

We are currently in Indonesia and leaving our boat in Malaysia for a season then returning to Melbourne. We have considered returning via Western Australia as the route via Borneo , in particular, Sabah and East Kalimantan is problematic. Has anyone done this upwind trip ? What is the best time to leave ?

Re: Indonesia back to Australia

Hi Cruzy,
We returned home to Fremantle from Langkawi earlier this year in our 34' cutter.

We made our way south to Singapore between December and February. We cleared in to Indonesia at Nongsa Point in early March. Very little wind to that point apart from a couple of thunderstorms (as usual).

We sailed non-stop from Nongsa to Benoa, Bali in March. Winds in the Java Sea were light and the passage took 10 days. It was a very nice sail on the last of the NW monsoon. Plenty of commercial traffic so AIS recommended.

In Bali we waited for the end of cyclone season. In late April a depression came past Bali and delayed our departure by a few days to early May. We departed for Dampier and had a fantastic close reach across the Timor Sea. A few thunderstorms about as we closed the Australian coast.

We spent several days in Dampier. From there we sailed to Exmouth, Geraldton and Fremantle, arriving in early June. The sail down the west coast was better than expected. We waited for one cold front to pass through while in Geraldton.

To get to Melbourne you'd need to push on fairly quickly to avoid crossing the Bight in mid-winter.

An alternative would be to cross the Timor Sea just prior to the cyclone season in order to cross the Bight in summer. Or cruise the WA coast for a while!

For more details of our trip see our blog.
Cheers,

Hi SV Zen Again. Thanks for that info. We like the idea of landing further south but would probably delay the bight until summer. Cheers Capt S

Re: Indonesia back to Australia

We are in Malaysia now and will return to the boat shortly. We would also like to head down to Australia with a planned arrival in April. Checking the winds for our trip it looks like there would be little winds except localized winds from squalls and possibly inshore winds. We spent Jan and February between Kalimantan and the top of the Java sea and experienced relatively good weather throughout that period. Don't know for sure what it will be like further south although apparently the farther east and south you go less rain can be expected. Sounds like lots of motorsailing though.

Re: Indonesia back to Australia

Just wondering how you all experienced the sail back down the coast of West Australia? Any specific season or month you would recommend? I am contemplating a sail from the Kimberleys back to Perth but not suit when to leave and return- presume October to March is not viable due to cyclones. However, would it be best to sail back to Perth in Autumn or in Spring, or the winter?

Re: Indonesia back to Australia

Hi ozzieKochie,
Our advice at the start of the thread remains unchanged. After a year in Fremantle we departed in mid-2016 to cross the southern Indian Ocean. We're now in Europe.

So an alternative is to not turn south and just head west!
Cheers,
Mike.

Mike, Unfortunately some of us have to go back to a job to ensure we can eventually keep on going West!
