Randall spoke with Quest as they were departing Cochin to sail to Mumbai, several days behind all the other rally boats. The rally boats were not sailing in convoy -- at least not before reaching Mumbai. Rally plans after Mumbai were "top secret."

We also spoke with Quest just before they left Cochin. They indicated nothing about possibly leaving the rally. Maybe they were not sailing in company with other rally boats at the time they were captured, but I would be highly surprised to learn of confirmation that Quest had officially quit the rally. I know what the BWR has posted on their website -- that Quest had decided to sail independently. It does not state that Quest had withdrawn from the rally.

The rally boats normally sail separately; then meet up at a specific destination. We became friends with several of the rally boats and met up with them in Phuket, Sri Lanka and Cochin. None of the boats sailed together; they met at designated destinations at designated times. There were at least 2 rally boats in the Maldives when the rest of the rally was in Cochin and then in Mumbai. Those 2 planned to sail to Salalah and meet up with the rest of the rally boats there.

A friend of theirs in a TV interview stated it could have been for medical reasons they left the rally.

Re: 'Big Catch' S/V Quest Capture - Non-Politcal !

Mark J. You are a little funny that I took the jail instead of the leaving option. They arrested me and charge me with a felony which was later thrown out of court. I declared my weapon. The choice to leave was thrown out to me from immigration as my wife was Colombiana without a visa. The arrest negated the leaving option. The Mexican Navy was guarding my boat. The punched a hole in the side of my boat with their boat. The stole several good ropes and I stole my chart plotter. Yes most of the Mexican people are good and honest people but I will not go back there and I warn cruisers that kidnapping and crime do apply all over Mexico not just to the border areas. Just read the news.

I hope the best for the people on the S/V Quest. They rolled the dice and lost.

Confirmed
4 Americans on hijacked yacht dead off Somalia - CBS News

Quote:
(CBSNews) The four Americans aboard a yacht hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia are dead.

Hijacked last Friday off Oman, the Quest was being piloted toward the Somali coast - and was being shadowed by a U.S. Navy warship.

CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports that gunshots aboard the yacht were heard, and the warship took action.

All 4 Americans were dead, killed apparently by their captors.

There were more than a dozen pirates on board, some dead and others captured, Martin reports.

Re: Chart of Pirate attacks & QUEST position

Sad news. Just heard a report here in New York (WABC RADIO) and all four Americans have been killed. Some type of action was taken by U.S. Forces. Some pirates have also been killed.

Same on SKY just now... seems the shadowing vessel made a move and the pirates executed the captives before they could get there...

Goes to show executing the hostages is not a winning idea.

Re: 'Big Catch' S/V Quest Capture - Non-Politcal !

As hard and sad as this is, making a policy of not letting them get to shore may in the long run deter those pirates, and I would say shooting them all on the spot might help also-if they killed the hostages

Re: 'Big Catch' S/V Quest Capture - Non-Politcal !

I am upset that these people were killed in cold blood. Hopefully their deaths are not in vain and because of them something substantial will finally be done to eradicate the problem. My condolences to the families.
