"A QUEENSLAND couple on a dream cruise have been forced to abandon their luxury yacht mid-ocean in a freak accident.
The Bundaberg couple were rescued after the husband was injured and now may have lost the uninsured $150,000 vessel.
The 12m boat Illusion was reluctantly abandoned by Ann and Chris Robinson 390 nautical miles east of Bundaberg on Wednesday, when they were taken on board a rescue ship..."

take care of yourself out there as you do on land also. insure your boat .. maybe for less than book value but at least more than nothing after a freak accident.

I agree with George. No matter how experienced and careful you are, in 50 to 70 knot winds this is the kind of thing that can happen to anyone.

If you don't have the money to insure your boat, you shouldn't go out or... buy a smaller boat. It's not worth it.

Whenever you go to sea you take a risk…that has nothing to do with insurance.

Whenever you insure your boat you take a risk…. that the insurance company will honour their commitment instead of deeming you negligent.

A sailor’s freedom is in being allowed to manage their own risks, accept the consequences and not be criticised by other sailors who don’t know the details.

I also agree with Pelagic. We cruised for 2 1/2 years in the Bahamas/Caribbean with only liability coverage. We made the decision to cancel comprehesive coverage (as have many others) because the premiums for sailing that region in our boat were too high for our budget. We went cruising anyway and had a blast. If we had lost the boat, we would have been heart broken. But as long as we survived, it wouldn't have been the end of the world or the dream. Of course, we didn't exactly have a 150K boat either.

And methinks that is the key. A boat that (for mere financial "mortals"

) would break yer heart to lose, but would not crucify you financially.

The question to insure or not is a tough one. I am 40 years old, been boating all my life, and I have never been involved in anything that required an insurance claim. Bad stuff happens in this world, and you can't insure against all of it. And, if you are over-insured, the winner is the insurance company. I know people that lost their child in a car accident. Do I stop driving? That would insure that I never die in a car accident, wouldn't it? Or, do I drive carefully? Car insurance is the law and reasonably cost effective due to economies of scale that don't exist in the Ocean Passage-making world.
