Ohh, those guys! We did meet Jake and Jackie on Hokule'a last November up in Moreton Bay, but never got to know them too well. Don't think we have encountered Solstice though.

Cheers,

We're already in Mackay and hope to be in Cairns by November. Trouble is we keep finding beautiful places we don't want to leave! Ahh the cruising life is hard.
Glorious weather here at the moment

Doesn't get much better than at present.

Might need the iron sail to get anywhere, though.

I just had a look at the price lists for a few marinas round the Whitsundays! Any suggestions for those of us who are on a budget?
Hi Boracay be aware that in Shute Harbour and Pioneer Bay that Club Marine and several other insurance companies have made this a no go zone so no insurance. This is a bit of a bugger as this is where you will have to go to re stock. I have changed my insurance company because of this money grabbing rule and as I have a mooring in Pioneer Bay it was untenable for me. If you must go to a marina try going up to Bowen its a nice trip and you can restock there and will not have to take out a loan to stay HaHa Cheers Jacko

My understanding is that boats not normally moored in pioneer bay won't be insured for NAMED STORMS there. You'd be OK for collisions etc though.

There's been so many moored boats written off in th elast few years, the word going round is that many insurers are going to refuse to insure boats kept on swing moorings anywhere.

But restocking from Cannonvale is pretty easy. Anchor round near the VMR boat ramp and it's a short walk to a shopping centre from there. We usually get in and back out in the same day.

The VMR Whitsunday ramp loos to be the go for restocking. Bus every half
hour, taxi back?

I don't recall anything in my Club Marine policy about moorings, though I do recall something about one of the other companies refusing to insure moored boats. My policy has an exclusion clause for unsuitable moorings though.

It does seem that every time there's a serious storm come through boats end up on the rocks.

Any tips on best anchoring practice in Pioneer Bay?

If you read through your policy, not the brochure you will find most insurers will exclude from coverage any vessel left at anchor unaccompanied for more than 24 Hrs.

There's a Coles shopping centre within easy walking distance of the VMR ramp. (from memory 200-300m) You could get a taxi back, but it's really not far to push a shopping trolley. (and return it of course). No hills on the way either.

Anchoring is the same as most places, it's pretty good holding mud, but if you're from down South just be aware the tidal range will be a lot more than you might be used to.

Sydney mid May to Cairns mid July, that's not going slowly!

You're right! Not slowly, actually pretty fast. Australia is huge.

Anyone doing Sydney to Mackay in one hop.

Putting aside Hervey Bay what else is being missed on the way?

Don't know why you would do Sydney Mackay direct? Unless you have an appointment there. You'd be missing the best bits of Australia's East Coast. Too many too mention. Once you get to Mackay you have to share with others (charter yachts). On the way there are so many great spots to enjoy all to yourself.

We are in Hervey Bay. Heading North slooowwllyyyy.
