Water Shortages in SoPac

Evidently, there are severe water shortages in some parts (Tuvalu, Tokelau, & Samoa) of the SoPac.

And ➥ BBC News - South Pacific water shortage hits Tokelau

Have any of our Pacific cruisers noted water shortages in the region?

Re: Water Shortages in SoPac

The Ha'apai group in Tonga generally has a tough time most years but they have adapted because of it. Yasawas in Fiji struggle each year but there is a high tourist loading there as well. We're in Vanuatu now and it is the most lush place I have ever cruised. Avacados the size of Pawpaw earlier this year!!

Makes my plans to install a watermaker look more logical. I figure a yacht that shows up to Island Seldom Visited with power tools, a Honda 2000 and the ability to make a few dozen jerry cans of potable water will be greeted with smiles and maybe a roast pig.

Over population is the problem. Plenty of atolls face shortages through the dry season. It happens in the smaller atolls of the Marshalls as well.

Re: Water Shortages in SoPac

“Military planes from Australia & New Zealand will fly a large desalination unit to Tuvalu's main island of Funafuti.

New Zealand has already flown smaller units to Tuvalu but its foreign minister said more capacity was needed.

Tuvalu has declared a state of emergency over the shortage, caused by the La Nina weather phenomenon...

... Earlier this week, the Tuvalu Red Cross warned that water supplies in some areas - including outlying islands - could run out within days.

Neighbouring Tokelau has also declared a state of emergency over a water shortage. A US coast guard vessel is on its way to the tiny three-atoll territory with 36,000 gallons of fresh water....”
