Love to hear about folks experiences sailing in Vavaú, good and bad spots etc

See if you can get hold of the "Moorings" guide, it lists all the great anchorages. Vava'u is a favourite of cruisers, reasonably highly populated but with enough good anchorages to spread the fleet our. One of my favourites is Port Maurelle and Hunga Lagoon would probably be next on the list. Sailingbird guide to vava'u is a worthwhile investment. For a touch of civilisation, return to the town of Neiafu and enjoy the many cafes & pubs accessible by dinghy.

We stayed for about a month during the time Pete NoTies was there and we certainly loved being out at the anchorages, then popping back in to Neafu once per week to hit the pub, get water and ... well there was not much else to do... LOL

All the cruising people there are pretty damn cool because to get there you have to cross an ocean (at least one).

Theres a few charter people but not too many, and even fewer resort based tourists.

And the whale watching is great! Only downside is the local whale spotting boats will heard the whales and get too close excluding you even a small close up look.

#8 Nuku is awesome. And the snorkeling at #16 is amazing. This is some of the most healthy coral we've seen in the normal south pacific cruising route. we're here for another couple of weeks if you want to send specific questions. you can contact us through our blog below.

I believe the spelling is Vavau or Vava'u.

Get the Moorings manual. It will keep you away from all my favorite anchorages there.

Get shots from Google Earth, they help.

It's all in the guide but you have to dive into the hidden cave!

We were there 2 months ago chartered a moorings 380 catamaran. Decided it was too far away to take our boat and be able to get enough use given work commitments

Great place to sail and the anchorages are beautiful.

Get the Moorings guide (it is online) and the Sailingbird guide (for the better detail).

We would go back tomorrow if I could just organise the clients to go away for 10 days.

We loved it there! Try to hit the annual Vava'u regatta. It is held mainly for full time cruisers, but you could join in on the fun in a charter boat as well. They hold numerous parties and sailboat races. Check out our pictures from Tonga by clicking here:
