Vancouver to San Francisco Sept 2015

Have seen prior threads on this. We will be re-positioning our 82 foot power boat from Vancouver to San Francisco this September. First time making this trip. Will leave last week August or 1st week September. No stops planned. Looking for recommendations on distances to stay off shore. Have seen 15nm, 30 nm, etc. For folks who have made this trip, would love your observations/suggestions on this, and any recommendations of resources that would help us in planning.

Closer to shore gives you smaller seas and less wind, the down side is that there is more traffic!
