The usual route is up the Inside Passage. It's a walk in the park with only a few open water stretches of about 30 or 40 miles. We say lots of small boats in Alaska from BC like Catalina 27's. Precautions? Watch for logs in the water, check your tide currents in the passes, that's about it.

Also watch out for bears on shore when you go exploring.

Uh, there are preferred times of year. Don't go north after Oct. 30, but spring is more flexible - depends on the year, but the earliest pleasure cruise I've heard of is early April.

It's very easy to rock hop from protection to protection, even with the parade of lows in the winter. Just that it's not fun, and you might take risks you shouldn't.

Nortrh to Alaska

Michael,

Read the book 'Passage to Juneau" by Jonathan Raban. It's a story about his trip from Seattle to Juneau. It's part history book, part travel log and a very good read.

Fair winds,

Pappy Jack
