Two Harbors to San Diego Sailing Time

I am taking off from Two Harbors, Catalina to Shelter Island, San Diego this Saturday morning. I am on a 39' Endeavor Sloop. What kind of sailing time can I expect?

Any tips?

hey, welcome aboard the CF message board. Check the "passage weather" site for projected winds and plot your course. I suspect you'll avg about 3-5 k and if my math is correct, assuming you don't stop along the way it's roughly 80 miles. If you run faster with a lot of sail up (Spin?) then probably 10 hrs.

Thumbs up Thanks

I'll check the passade weather and try to leave early ~6AM. On the way up here everything was on our nose...took 14+ hours.

I guess there are worse problems...

If you are in a hurry then it is a straight shot but If not in a hurry you are missing a couple of nice stops. Newport Beach has $5 a night moorings, Dana Point has free anchorage. (don't anchor near the bait dock). Never stopped at Oceanside but it is worht a stop. By taking the little ~25 nm trip to newport you can then have a nicer trip to SD. Best weather you are going to get is off the radio. Have a nice trip and let us know how it goes.

I would figure 4.5 -5 knots in your boat. If you are the type to keep it moving.....

the norm from avalon harbor to san diego bay is 18-24 hours. even with huge following seas and surfing speeds of up to 13 kts. this is fact. i have done it an so have my friends--they usually have a sailing time of 22 hours in a prindle tri of 30 ft.. fastest i ever did the trip was 19 hours from avalon to ocenaside-in a 37 irwin aft cockpit sloop--including the 13 kt surfing down 30 ft seas--1994, day after a storm ...fastest i have gone from lost angeles to san diego , including surfing down smaller waves, was 19 hours-in a kettenburg 43...you can expect to get to dago in about 19-24 hours after departing 2 harbors.

I have made the Two Harbors to San Diego trip 11 times. Mostly with little wind, so a lot of motoring. I usually average 6.5 to 7.5 knots. I leave Cherry cove at Two Harbors at 0500 and usually get to San Diego before dark, say 7:30.

I have been sailing to and from Catalina (usually White Cove) at least yearly since I was a young boy (I'm very old now). Additionally, I keep my boat in the Shelter Island basin. Most of the time the return trip is flat calm with no wind whatsoever whereas the trip there is usually a 'bash'. Regardless, almost every time we clock 12 hours, portal to portal.

Fair winds and calm seas.
