Tropical Cyclone Sandra

Sandra is weak and well offshore at the moment I hope it stays that way.

Short-term forecast map

Ocean Wind Warning 1 (QLD)

I hope she doesn't turn into a Sandy.

Re: Tropical Cyclone Sandra

It looks like it's going to be a big one.

Been named Sandra. Unfortunately similar in name to Sandy.

Local lore in Mooloolaba was that they were susceptible to late season cyclones, which should put it there Saturday week, about the time I'm due to fly in.

News report here.

Sorry about the name. There seems to be some confusion Fiji has given it another name. It intensify to a hurricane cat 5 Will not turn south but carry on 90 deg true tracking Speed across at MSL - 7 knots

It;s heading East. It's not late session system - there is another 85 days untill it can be called a late season tropical hurricane weather system.

I'll give it a 5 rating now!

Least we agree it's not in the China sea.

Re: Tropical Cyclone Sandra

Don't worry about stormcruiser, he has as many different usernames on another sailing forum as this cyclone appears to have.
I'm watching this one with mild interest as we have a 33metre cat on the hard in New Cal and would really like to get it back to Vanuatu early next week. My wife might get a bit scratchy if I leave her alone for another cyclone as well, women are funny like that.

Re: Tropical Cyclone Sandra

I wouldn't place any credence in Fiji met service forecasting. Ever since they decided Neville was too clever to work there, the local papers have been putting the forecast on the same page as the comics for a reason. For first class, unpoliticised forecasting try googling nadraki well worth a subscription.
Disclaimer, I bought him a beer once.

Another link to orientate the direction and intention re this weather system.

Qld Tropical Cyclone Threat Map

Plus

http://www.met.gov.fj/aifs_prods/0990.jpg

I find the Fiji met quite exceptionaly good inrespect there MSLP Charts for the Island region - Better than NZ Met service for the Island territories and there Sat Maps are from the same source US sat so they can't blunder that to much. No need to get personel because he renamed it and succeeded in turning it away from Fiji to chase a troll killer. Its Going to head the length of New Cal as a 4 then turn towards Brisbane and head inland.
