Summer Cruising in the San Juans

Was in Friday Harbor for the lagoon rendezvous the end of July. We also hit:
Prevost, - love the walk out to Turn Point,
Roche, - obligatory at least once a summer
Anacortes, - good pick up and drop off point for visitors
Deer Harbor, - restaurant is closed now
Blind bay
Garrison Bay - for the history lesson
Fisherman Bay - just because I love the entrance

Plus a bunch in the Gulf Islands. It just never gets old.

Here are a few shots from a little hidey hole we found on Saltspring Island in Canada on the way back from a month's vacation.
The low tide allowed us to anchor with just enough swinging room to avoid rocks on three sides.
We dropped the hook on the "dries at zero tide" as we figured the least depth we could see would be about 3 ft.
It's not in any cruising guides and is smaller than a nearby recommended "tight" anchorage.
There's a reef across most of the entrance which doesn't show in the pics which were taken at high tide.
The reef almost completely knocks down any wakes from passing ferries or other traffic.

Hidden Basin is another Canadian gem that most boaters are afraid of due to the shallow entrance with huge currents.
There's also a couple of doglegs to maneuver around, but we were fortunate to connect with a local who helped us in.

Very nice! That's a big cruising kitty. Your go fast machine is awesome. That last shot is terrifying. You multi's always tickle me when you talk about shallow bays, we draw 9'!

We hit all of those except Anacortes this year, along with many others, as I'm sure you did as well. We stayed at Prevost twice, and of course Sucia. That walk out to Turn Point Lighthouse is sweet! One of my pics on the first page is of the lighthouse from the sea. There were some Lagoons at Sucia when we were there, wouldn't be surprised if you were one of them. There wre also three Nauticats in the anchorage at once, my 52, a 43, and a 39. It was damn near a Nauticat rendezvous!

Did you notice the house and extensive property in the bay just to the left of the island for sale?
The property goes all the way up the hill, and around to a spit.
There are multiple buildings which might be for conferences, guest accomodations etc.
There's a water tank sprouting multiple antennas at the top of the hill.
The entrance to the house has a HUGE green four leaf clover at the beach's end of the sidewalk.
I think it's there to remind the owner of his roots, but I might be just imagining that.

The owner is Paul Allen.

So, I thought this thread might be a good opportunity to lobby the mods for a minor change in the forum I would like to suggest. That is to split the sub-forum "Pacific-South China Seas" into two or more sub-forums. It seems to me that this one sub-forum would contain several of the larger CF demographics, ie west coast US sailors, Australians, New Zealanders, those in SE Asia, those cruising Mexico, etc. etc. Perhaps it would be used more and used more appropriately if it were split up? I know I don't normally post here because it just doesn't make much sense to me, but if there were, say, a PNW or a West Coat US sub-forum I would probably post a lot to it. I'm sure Australians would like an Aussie sub-forum, and probably so would others. Maybe I'm wrong? Anyone else agree? Sure seems like a big chunk of the globe for a single "Destinations" sub-forum...

I to would love to see a PNW sub set. I agree the Pacific is a big place. Narrowing it down some would make the posts more relevant.

It's heaven on earth year around if ya have heat and a dry boat !! LOL If this Hog we are buying sails even fairly well, we will be home in a year or two !!
