Re: Summer Cruising in the San Juans

A little more Friday Harbor fun. The kids had a blast at the San Juan County Fair. No one else has pics of this summer's sailing the islands? Come on, be brave and post 'em...

Re: Summer Cruising in the San Juans

I really liked this sign. Nice that the local authorities even bother to pretend they care, but I am waiting for someone to draw on the little fingers poking up we all know this picture needs to be more realistic...

LOL! Sorry man. To be honest my wife is the true shutterbug in the family, but of course most of her pics are of the kids. These are mine, I try for a little more nature/art feel. She has a 500 gig external hard drive that's almost full. I think she averages about 50k pictures a year anymore. She must be well over 250k pics by now. An average day off for her is about 800 pics, which she then dumps half of. It's madness to me. But our kids have the best documented childhood ever, they could almost go through their whole life day by day in pictures. I don't mind so much when I think back and realize just how much I've forgotten. There might be a couple of dozen pictures of me as a kid in existence. The world sure has changed a lot...
Those are some brand new Schattauer sails. The genoa was less than a week old when we shoved off for this trip. Note the quadruple stitched seams, each stitch full length with enough thread on the bobbin to go all the way, no stops and starts. The corner tabling is nine layers of 10.5 oz. thick!

Re: Summer Cruising in the San Juans

We just brought VALIS up to Friday Harbor after racing in the San Francisco to Oahu Pacific Cup. I haven't had a chance to do any cruising here yet, but this will be our permanent home and I'm really looking forward to some great adventures.

Here is VALIS on our mooring, in Griffin Bay. That's Mt. Baker in the background.

Re: Summer Cruising in the San Juans

Here's a few from our time down there this summer. Given your shot of Adventuress and the boat behind it I suspect we were there at the same time. The fog looks familiar too.

Ran into a monster bank from Watmough Bay to James Island and on to Anacortes. Thank goodness for radar !!! Must admit though the Washington State ferry looks bigger in person than on the radar screen.

Between the San Juan's and the Gulf Islands we do live in some spectacular cruising grounds.

Nice! Sounds likely, we stayed in Friday Harbor on three separate occasions this summer. And we dropped the hook in Watmough Bay four times, the kids love it there, I'm sure you noticed some of my pics are there. We set up our telescope on Boulder Island in the mouth of Watmough to watch the meteors...
It sure is nice to have radar, I have to agree with that. Lots of big boats moving fast in the fog out there. I like the stack of cats! Nice Orca too. It's too bad these shots never quite translate, they look so big in the flesh but the photos never do justice. Sort of like wave photos. Thanks for posting these...

Re: Summer Cruising in the San Juans

Hell, wish I was cruising. We own four boats and don't have a single one in the water. Hopefully, the little Doug Peterson racer/cruiser will be done in a week or so.
