Best to wait till November, after hurricane season. Some folks sail it in 2 weeks, others take 2 years.

Re: San Diego to carribbean

leaving san diego is the easy part.
are you planning on one jump to panama or are you going to harbor hop down the coast of central america?
if doing one jump to panama it should take about 5-6 weeks or so to get to panama.
harbor hopping is longer, as you may wish to remain in some harbors for a lil time. it all depends on what you are doing and how you are doing it. mad dash vs cruising the area.
as far as how long thru canal-- dont know that yet. still working on that aspect of my trip--i am still in mexico.

We are planning to harbor hop from Mexico through the canal to the East coast. Probably stop in each country. Is there advice soeoe can give me about customs, visas etc. In central and south america? Does each country have its own rules? Is there any sort of centralized embassy or something where one can get what they need for passing through the countries? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You can find most of what you need on The info is not always 100% up to date because they rely in large measure on cruisers reporting any changes, but it's pretty darn good.
