Sailing to Micronesia Friday...Do's, Don't, and Must See's?

Greetings Everyone,

I'm starting the next leg of my solo sailing adventure departing from Honolulu en route Majuro on the Marshall Islands this Friday, October the 14th. I plan to cruise Micronesia, visiting the various island countries until spring time and then decide whether to head to the South Pacific or continue on to SE Asia. It appears that this is the less popular route when headed westbound, and as such, there is not as much archived information, both on this website and others.

I would love to hear from other cruisers that have sailed the area about any unforeseen hardships they encountered, places they recommend I visit, and general information about the area.

Wishing all the best to my east coast sailors rights now.

Cheers,
Andy

Having lived on Pohnpei for two years I strongly recommend visiting Nan Madol which are Pohnpei's ancient ruins and spending a day on the 6 waterfall hike. Both are must see attractions.

When you check in they will direct you to the anchorage located just outside Mangrove Bay Hotel. There is a dinghy dock and you just go into the Pohnpei Surf Club located on the first floor of the hotel and ask for Allois. He will be able to help you out with tours and if you surf Pohnpei has one of the worlds top right handers.

Good luck with your trip!

I recall stumbling upon 2 or 3 blogs from sailors visiting FSM but can't find them in my bookmarks. I remember that one of the blogs kept criticizing the fact that at the POEs they don't always follow the official visa free travel for US citizens as per COFA agreement and still charge in and out fees of various amounts at whim. As well as local port masters charging "anchoring fees" up to $50 per day.

May be this will help to start with.
