Reef visit between Townswille and Cairns

I am taking my monohull sailing boat to Darwin and have a crew (staying till Cairns) who would really like to visit part of the Great Barrier Reef. We are in Townsville at the moment. I am thinking of either stopping for snorkeling during the day or maybe stay for the night.

I was checking the charts and none of them looks inviting except the ones near Cairns (Green island and Arlington and co which are in the Lucas guidebook). Do you have any other recommendations?
