Red Sea Passage . . . Sailing or Selling ?

I am located in New caledonia, and just thinking going back to Europe next season (april2011 -april2012). South africa road is just too much for me.

Sailing, or selling the boat here or in australia?

Any other cruisers with the same dilemna?

If you sell the boat in Aus you will most likely be up for GST and a 5% import duty. However, selling prices in Aus are higher than many places in the world, so you may even make a tiny profit based on your original purchase price.

Obviously, there is are more buyers in Aus than New Cal or New Zealand.

You could always leave it out of the water at a safe marina and come back and get it later too!

Cheers

to get an indication of pricing go here
www.boatpoint.com.au
or
Yachts & Boats for Sale - Used Boats Online - New Boat Sales | Yacht & Boat

These are two of the main classified and broker sites in Aus.

Selling in Australia

Thanks for the replies.

Panama, is not a real option, unless getting to the 40ies to the chili coast. At this point is it worth to get up to panama or trying the horn? My boat is OK for doing this trip, te captain also, but the familly gave veto for it

Selling in australia is a good option : AU$ is at his highest again euro making the boat a good bargain for australian. Apparently the taxs are closer of 15%, but my main issue is that the Australian custom ask me to pay this tax just for entering in Australian waters if my purpose is to advertise the boat. And as I know , no way to be refounded if i am leaving without selling her.

So new caledonia sound a better place to stay, because if australian want to buy here they can get her duty free (conditions applies as they say in any good advertising , but it s posible) . Low euro, duty free, it sound like i can sell this 42 feet alloy blue water baby for 135000 AU$, which sounds attractive.

Unfortunatly, australian don't know much about this french designed alloy centerboarders and it looks like they just scratch their heads about her.
(get an idea of it on my blog Via 42 for sale ! )

anybody know if this type of boat is popular outside of europe?

Today I check the euro AU$ parity, and the euro is at his lowest point of the yaer at only 1.31 AUD for one euro.

My 42 feet alloy sloop was 150000 AUD in august. The price for australian is now only 130000 AUD (without changing my price in euro). That's really time for me to think for a sale in Australia.

If anybody is interested, my personnal blog for selling the boat is :
Via 42 for sale !

The Red Sea passage isn't for everyone, but most people make it safely through the Gulf of Aden and up the Red Sea. We did the Red Sea, and I would seriously consider doing it again. There's lots of interesting things to see and do on the Red Sea Route. It adds a very different flavor to a circumnavigation.

If I was going to give up sailing in the Med, then I might consider selling in OZ. If I planned on continuing my sailing adventures in the Med, then I would sail up the Red Sea and not sell my yacht.
