Re: Planning advice for Chile and Argentina

Very interesting thread.

I'm setting off next year on a circumnavigation and hearing of the virtual doubling of fees for the Panama Canal I'm seriously considering heading south and doing the Beagle channel (or even the Cape if conditions are favourable).

There are two overriding questions though:
1. I'll be going East-West, is this doable?
2. I'll be in an unisulated 36 footer. Suitable or not? (I've heard you need a bigger boat down there although I've not heard a convincing reason why)

The question really is: are you a competent, experienced, knowledgable and tough seaman?

If you are it is certainly doable.

If you are not, then probably not a great idea.

It is serious down there. Generally I don’t think people should go unless they have a specific burning passion to do it. And avoiding panama fees is really not much motivation for such an endeavor.

As many boats come from the east as come from the west... probably more.
If your boat can get you down the coast of Argentina you can survive the canales.
Friend I met last year came from the Atlantic in a rather vintage 28 foot Dufour... left Williams for the north in April.. no heating.. no insulation... he survived ...

Uninsulated? ... Double glaze your windows with clingfilm... live as close to ambient as you can.... carry lots of **woollen** thermal underwear... headgear that covers your ears... and good gloves...

Ping would I be right in saying the scenery makes up for any hardship?
Cheers

What hardship would that be?

But ...yes.

Deep south in Aug/Sept a decade apart.....

Near the western end of Magallanes after a 3 week slog up from Paso Tortuoso... enjoying a luverly southerly and clear skies that stayed with us for several weeks.

Re winter.... for me there are two seasons... summer and winter..... winter is April to September inclusive. In the far south June/July are a bit hardcore.... July is the only month I have chosen not to go sailing...just too much darkness... not enough rum....

A further point.... I don't do hard, wet or windward if I can avoid it... longest 'wait on weather' experience has been 8 days. I've waited longer than that for nice sailing weather in more temperate climes... and don't mention the tropics.. they have hurricanes....

Great photos Ping. Looks like hard sailing for a Queensland boy.
Cheers
