Pitcarin Island

CYS, I've heard about what happened a few years back. I hope that they are kept in order. The events/history aside, I would still like to go there some day.

Pitcairn has always fascinated me, mostly because of it's remote location and romantic history.

I re-read some articles on the sex abuse convictions. Hopefully things are better now, and I don't want to sound like I'm condoning their behavior, but I find the cultural context interesting, albeit a little disturbing.

All but one of the original mutineers were dead within a few years. The seagoing services in general were a brutal life at that time, and these were particularly brutal individuals. The Polynesians they brought with them (by choice or otherwise) were from a culture where women married very young by Western standards. There was a small group of people on a remote island with no law enforcement. It's not hard to see how the "law of the jungle" took over. It's a good lesson to remember whenever we get feeling romantic about leaving civilization behind and living like the inhabitants of Pitcairn.

When the US ship Topaz arrived they only found one white man left with a several Polynesian ladies and lots of kids running around. The British Government pardoned him.

I think it's a miracle the community survived there at all, and in doing adopted relatively normal behaviour ( note relatively)

I am cruising nearby but bent my anchor and I don't know how to fix it. Can I get a replacement shipped to Pitcairn? It weighs about 20kg anyone know how much that would cost?

I looked into that, Pitcairn doesn't have an airport. I am worried about continuing on my trip without an anchor and the problem is that the next ship to call on the island won't be here for about four weeks.

I can't wait that long cuz, you know, I'm on a schedule.

There's not a lot going on around here, but they do a little bit of farming and I noticed some rusty old broken equipment when I visited the tip. I also noticed it looks like they have a welder in an equipment shed I was snooping in. Can anybody send me plans to make an anchor myself?

Or better yet does anyone have one I can just borrow? I don't want to inconvenience you with my lack of preparedness, but making an anchor seems like a lot of work.

Make a "cement anchor"...a cube of concrete surrounding a chain...dimension is two cubic feet...attach the chain/rode to it, then lower it as you would an anchor; good for shallows...under 50 ft depth, but it will hold...attach a ball to it... Good luck!

I don't think there s anything too unique about this island when it comes to sex. While in the Marquesas I spoke with the local French Police and I asked them what the crime rate was like, he responded that its a safe place as long as your not a local as incest was the biggest problem on the Islands.

You might want to place a couple of pieces of rebar or steel in a "T" so that the ends are sticking out of the wet concrete for a little bit more grab. It couldn't hurt.
