Pirates Cove, De Courcy Island, BC

We were cruising in the Gulf Islands this week and had planned on spending our last night in Pirates Cove, then departing early in the morning at slack tide in order to catch the start of the flood through Gabriola Pass. (We stayed there once before, it is beautiful but the entry into the cove is tricky.) When I checked the chart, the depth at the entry to the cove would have been only a couple of feet deep at low tide, too low for our keel which draws about 4', preventing us from getting an early departure. We went on to silva Bay instead.

Has anyone in a small sailboat ever been trapped in Pirates Cove? I guess I am not totally convinced that we should have avoided the cove, but the numbers were on the chart so we played it safe.

Leave and enter on a high tide, if you are worried. 4 feet should not be much of a problem.

Use the range with the arrow on the shore and the X on the tree.

You can have many safe nights at Pirates Cove but I wouldn't say that your fears are unfounded. We can't get in and out except at higher tides so we wouldn't go in if any wind were forecast. We like the pocket anchorage at the S side of that same island if the winds allow.
