New Caledonia or New Hebrides ?

Id like to hear some opinions from some cruisers who have been to these islands. if you had to choose between the two which would you pick and why? due to time, we may have to decide to pick one or the other on the way from fiji to brisbane.

im interested in beautiful islands, sheltered anchorages, possibilities of good waves, and nice culture.

which islands tends to be more expensive? which is easier to get into and out of in regards to customs and visas?

any opinions?

Very different cultures. New Caledonia is French, with the food & wine to match. Beautiful sailing. Vanuatu (New Hebrides) is a different world. On most of the islands people are living like they did a few hundred years ago. So, I'm not sure you would call this "nice culture" but for us it is the most incredible place we have been. Here are some pictures from Vanuatu: Remote Village Tanna

Dont forget the "French" people
The French FINALLY realise that the rest of the world views them as arrogant | Mail Online and yes, this is a generalisation but I have met a lot more who were than those who are "normal". :-)

And I found the costs of supplies in New Cal to be quite a bit higher than Vanuatu

Re: New Caledonia or New Hebrides ?

Noumea, New Caledonia has very easy check in - they come to your boat. To check out you need to walk a ways and visit 3 locations, but it goes easy.
Vanuatu depends on where you arrive. At Tanna (and you need to go there to see the volcano at least) you need to take a 2 hour four wheel drive trip across the island. On Aneityum, if it's during cruise ship season then it's really easy. The main city, Port Vila is worth a visit and check in and out goes pretty easy. So, I wouldn't us that as your reason tochoose one over the other.

Forced choice, then I would definitely choose Vanuatu. Entry and exit (immigration and customs) straightforward (Port Vila). Cost of living much less than New Caledonia. Tremendous variety in islands and anchorages. Incredibly friendly people. A beautiful place.
