Misima Island, PNG

I just received this post on facebook from someone on Misima Island:

Misima Island

More disgraceful reports of crime at Misima. A grounded yacht with three European male sailors on board has been pirated by people from Oyamotimoti. This stealing of property from the yacht and the drunken party that followed brings shame to our people. This has been followed by a second breaking at the Bwagaoia bakery and freezer goods as well as dry goods stolen. Just how well are the police working for our honest people. Why is no one ever charged when so many must share in the stolen goods? Shame for Misima!

Re: Misima Island, PNG

There is no reason to go to Misima. Lots of lovely islands in the area. One of our lessons from PNG is to avoid anyplace large enough to have people who migrate there away from their clan/extended family. There is no dependable rule of law and the traditional system keeps people in check in small communities... not larger ones like Misima.

Just adding my $.02 from 3 mos in PNG last year.

That sounds like a valuable lesson Behan, obviously the safety issue's of PNG worry us as well.

I must go back and read your blog posts, as I recall you had no problems thought the islands.

Re: Misima Island, PNG

Hi Glenn, a few links to help out:

I blogged about identifying a safe route here, before we left; this bears updating with what we experienced but basically played out as written.

I've also put a summary together on Noonsite based on our experience of cruising PNG in 2012 that addresses security.

fair winds- hope we get to meet in SE Asia somewhere!

Sorry, but a map that is referenced in Noonsine, is not there, links are dead. Did you remove it?

Indeed! I just noticed that it is not on google.com, but on google.com.au which was not whitelisted in my NoScript... I whitelisted it and voila, it opens! Thank you for help, and sorry for confusion!

Re: Misima Island, PNG

Thanks nomadic mama, i'm heading there for a second time in late May next month.

My first trip to PNG was fantastic, spent most of our time in Samurai and surrounds on my local friends trading vessel. I've now bought a catamaran and am sailing it to Kwato for some repairs at my local friends repair yard. Having a local really helps with getting things done safely and well.

I've heard that I can clear in at Misima island, has anyone any experience with customs and immigration at Misima?

Once again thanks, I enjoy following your blog Sailing Totem, great work!

Michael

Mike471,

Welcome aboard CF.

I don't know if you noticed or not, but you responded to a 4 yr. old thread, so you may not hear back from Behan.

Re: Misima Island, PNG

Mining has ended at Misima. I think you'll find that it is no longer a manned Port of Entry.
