Marina in Tonga

Does anyone know if there are any marina facilities in Tonga??
I dont believe so but a guy is betting me a carton and says he's happy with the answer from this forum

Not really. The only thing we saw in 2008 that might loosely be called a marina is in Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu. At the main harbor there are a dozen of so berths, stern-to. Protect lines well to prevent rats, as the rats are quite large and plentiful in those rocks at your stern.

We arrived in Vava'U and visited almost every island southward through the Hai'pai Group, ending up at Tongatapu for a month. Never saw any other "facility" that might be construed as a marina except the main harbor at Tongatapu. Haven't read or heard of one being built since our last visit to Tonga.

I didn't go to Nuku'alofa so take Judys word for that.

No where else has nuffin. There is a short jetty in Niafu that for USD$15 you can put on water.

The rest of the islands and island groups have absolutly nothing.

Tonga is so blissful its blissful, however as cruisers have gone so far to get there the blissfulness is mitigated by the need for a smashing great chandelry and supermarket. There is NOTHING! So take everything! Expect NOTHING!

my friend has given up and says will pay up today, I myself was at nukulofa just last year and saw nothing. Have not been to Vavau so wsant sure.

Not really (2006). Up north there are some facilities, a boatyard-alike. Down south they may let you go into the fishing boat basin where you will tie between a wall and a (anchor?) line. Also - boatyards, etc. there.

I hope they will never get themselves one.

If they ever built on it would go broke. Cruisers don't generally want to be tied up on a slip when there are great anchorages and wonderful beaches just waiting to be explored.

The anchorage in the South can be hardly classified as great and the beach there is marginal. Given the fact that it is a springboard for all those going to NZ a couple of pontoons inside of the harbour would definitely fit the bill.

In the North, the anchorage is fine, but I cannot remember any beaches there. It is a Moorings area and a small marina would serve everybody as well.

The beaches and nice anchorages are mostly out of Neiafu and in the mid-group.
