Langkawi to Phuket- Tips / Advice ?

Hi all. Cruising from Langkawi to Phuket between December and February. If anyone has tips or advice on what to see, where to go, where not to go. I would appreciate it. Have already sailed around Langkawi so have seen a lot of what this beautiful isle has to offer. Also we will need to moor the vessel for about a week in or near Phuket. If anyone can suggest a safe marina or mooring that would be great!

If you get a chance, stop at koh rok, SW of koh lanta. Nice coral and a relatively secluded spot.

Lots of nice places on the way up. Talk to the sunsail guys as they know all the local spots.

A few marinas to choose from in Phuket. All expensive compared to Malaysia and will be quite busy at that time of year. Lots of pretty places to anchor though.

As i recall prevailing winds will be from the west that time of year.spent a month around Phuket.will dig out the charts and pilot and get back to you.
Unless you like crowds stay away from pipi. The market in phuket town is a must see......market across from the kickboxing stadium in patong is good to.if you like blood sports go see the kickboxing..Hire a local girl for the day that has good english.Should cost you around 500 bht. Will make your stay alot more interesting. And cheaper. There is a different price for thai and fangi's.interpeter helps alot.
When you see Phuket island first time you will see the big Buda.large white thing on top of hill on south side.Is worth the taxi ride. And tiger temple is also a must...ever pet a tiger?
If you have any questions send me a message.

Re: Langkawi to Phuket- Tips / Advice ?

On the way north,
Ko Rawi,Ko Adang.State parks undeveloped with good fishing, diving, hiking.Drop the hook on the south side of KO Lipi or pick up a ball if there is one available.Beach food/market is about as fresh as it gets.think Tiger Prawns.
North of that Ko Roc.Good snorkeling.Might be a little rough if the swells are up.Ko Ma,SE of pipi is a better place to drop the hook then pipi unless your looking for the nightlife of pipi.
North and to the EAST side of pipi, stay east of Ko Mai Phai.alot of reefs to the west.Your still in the grip of the pipi powerboats/longtails so head to the point west of Krabi,Laem Naug.night life here is more subdued and food is exultant.Dont worry about language difference.Restaurants have pics...laughng.Anckorage is to the east of the point.Drop in about 8meters.yellow buay on the east side of Anchorage.Stay to the west of it.If its rolly or the wind picks up run SW to Ko Dam Khwan{chicken island}drop the hook in 10meters due east of center of island.Excellent reef and the tourists are gone by dinner time.I spent 2 days just exploring and snorkeling here.
NW of there Ko Hong, cave you can dingy into. Please paddle in.NW of there is Ko KU do Yai.Tuck in on NW of island in about 5 meters.dont try to sail between island. There are coral heads that are unmarked.Dingy to a secluded cove with a small beach on the south side for some quiet time.
If your going to leave your boat i would leave it in Yacht Haven marine instead of Ah Chaong.Stay north of Ko Thanan and watch your depth.Dont try to run up to the marina with chart plotter.Chanel to the west last time i was there.Watch for crab pots and drop the hook south of marina just outside the mooring balls.there is a about a 2 to 3 knot currant so a dock is tricky to get into if you want to pay to leave it.
Hope this helps
Mark

Is that you Kuss? We'll be escaping the yard in the next couple weeks and will be doing the same route. We'll keep and eye out for you and have a cold one ready. Yacht Haven is a great place to leave the boat in Phuket. You can get a slip for about 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of Boat Lagoon or Ao Po or you can anchor out. The holding and protection are good. Ao Chalong is another option but not as pleasant.

PS: Don't miss the Butangs!
