LA to Indonesia or Australia

Hi,
I'm new to this community and hope you can give me some advice.
I'm a German living in Switzerland and I've been sailing for about 20 years, mostly in the baltic sea but also chartering in the med and canaries.
I was thinking about a circumnavigation but the part of the world I'm mostly interested in is the south pacific. I know the caribbean and it seems too touristy for me, also going around Africa or through Suez doesn't look appealing.
So, why not save the time and money and buy a boat in California, sail it west and sell it again.
Regarding the boat, I like it small and simple, a Flicka or Dana would be perfect for me.
My questions is now about papers and stuff like that, if I buy a boat in the US and sail it through the pacific islands, do you think I'll get in trouble being a German on an US-registerd boat (if I can register it).
I do not want to rush it, do you think a year is too short for that kind of trip?

Thank you,
Stephan

I think the boat side is doable just have an efficient way of catching rain.. or get a small watermaker as that and provisions will be your main area of difficulty.. considering the size of boat and distances/area's...
As an EU citizen you'll have no problems in the French Islands.. the boat I would suggest you register in Belgium...
Give yourself another year at least.. if you really want to 'experience' at least 1/2 of this area.. you may never want to leave..
