Kota Kinabalu and Sutera Harbour

Any recent advice on visiting Kota Kinabalu and Sutera Harbour would be welcome! We are sailing there in a 50 foot power catamaran in 2012.

Its a nice place, have you booked a spot?

And 50 or 55ft and any more info on the vessel?

and if its a powercat, surely you will be motoring not sailing

Thanks. Not booking anything until our sailing programme becomes clearer - and, yes, even power vessels sail! It is a 55 foot power catamaran, currently being built by Prout.

Fair enough
i noticed when last there a shortage of sizable multi berths if any, thats all.
But anchoring outfront would be my choice anyway

OK
Nice sailing boat and I hope the wind fills your sails nicely and blows in a favourable direction for you.

Yes, that's the one but not in those garish colours! Now I am confused by your sarcasm! As an ex-naval officer and someone who has sailed on sail and power vessels for 30 years, all ships that go to sea "sail" don't they! We don't use the term "motor"!

I dont know mate do they?

When I pull my sails down and turn the key I consider myself to be motoring
When I pull the sails up with motor still in use I consider that motorsailing
When the motors are shut down, I consider that sailing

On a motor boat with no mast or sails at all but just motors, no prizes for guessing what I consider it to be when I turn the key.

Now, excuse me while I jump in the car and "fly" down to the shops

Re: Kota Kinabalu and Sutera Harbour

Hi,

Check noonsite. They note some minor thefts having occurred at Sutera for boats at the south pontoons, and, if I remember correctly, some when folks anchoring in the general vicinity as well. Don't remember how recent the reports are.

Also, the advice given above on reservations seems sound as noonsite posts note that the club is "member oriented" and that space for visitors is limited and should be booked months in advance, if possible.

By the way, I spent about a decade "sailing" with the Navy myself, and I may be in KK around late March. Shoot me a PM on your itinerary when your plans are clear, and, if our schedules coincide, maybe we can meet at Sutera for a beer.

Best of luck,

G2L
