Thanks, Capt Phil. If your screen name is derived from Phil Harris, I love it. He was a spitting image of my older cousin, whose lifetime of crab and halibut fishing ended his life in a similar manner. Deadliest catch is not always about the outdoor weather--sometimes it's the cumulative effects of those indoor blizzards!

To bring this back in topic, beware of the Alaskan style indoor storms! Mother Nature spends as much time in bar bathrooms as she does on the open ocean.

....yes Mike, that's what I'm saying. I'm not suprised if other people don't get it though. I 've been to van->PR and back, all inside many stops and detours with less than 8 gals of ob mix(6mpg with an o/b) and I figured I was treating myself. A heavier boat wouldve been a drag and more motoring.

For the OP in Vancouver, to go outside means to head south through the Gulf islands, then up Juan de Fuca and further to Tofino just to get to the same latitude of Vancouver- an extra 200 miles much of it as quirky as anything northward. I'd definitely not bother with all that,to avoid Georgia and Johnstone Straits. These are just not that difficult to sail, despite the current and wind being inconvenient. Cripes, there's Plenty of wind in Johnstone Straits in the summer when the inflow is "on".... watch Fanny Isle in the local weathers.

Past that,there is plenty of choice as to route .

Sailing overnight from Bull Harbour to Skidegate on Haida Gwaii is a good way to get north under sail.
