Re: i2f in Panama . . . Again !

Hopefully, this issue is easily dealt with & John keeps his chin up. He was worried about not being able to reduce sail quickly in a blow, but I thought he'd found crew for that aspect. Still, 40 knots is 40 knots.

Yeah. Although prepping for my own trip, I'd be willing to toss a couple of hundred in to get a new main, but that's just a drop in the bucket. Just goes to show you that nature doesn't play favourites, I guess.

Yeah, Mike. John had this sail made just before leaving Florida last May. They had the headboard rip out on the first attempt out of Panama. It was repaired back in Panama. Not sure if the problem is related this time.

I don't know either but I hope I don't use that sailmaker by mistake one day!

Re: i2f in Panama . . . Again !

Hi everybody!

At least we're not in Panama anymore. The foot of the sail was shredded, and we have been on a reefed main in light air, very light. As Bank noted we thought we had crew for reefing the main. I was not sure if I had the strength, so we opted for crew.

He told stories of the Southern Ocean, and a delivery doing the bash from Cabo to San Diego. Turns out he was a paying crew member, and has no real experience himself. He wanted to add some excitement in his life at our cost. I will post in the next couple of days some ugly details about his deception.

In the mean time we are safe, and Imagine is fine. I do have a second main, but I chose to return to dump the crew. It was going to be a case of 3 went to sea, and 2 returned. To be honest this guy scares the crap out of me. I felt it was in Mel, Imagine's, and my own self interest to safely return. Once again it's time to pick myself up, and shake off the dust to move forward.......i2f

Thanks for the update, John. Your humor is always appreciated, and glad you guys are safe (and not in Panama).

Take care of yourself, your "little brown love", and keep on truckin!

I2F,

We are glad you are safe. I will PM you later. We saw aa shreded sail when we were down south in the Carribean. They were a young couple but were having fun. It was their jib. Looked like mine. Please keep us updated.

Re: i2f in Panama . . . Again !

Hey, John!
Remind me not to stand too close to you around any construction projects in Hawaii!
Sounds like there's a good story for your blog in this. As mentioned, we're heading to Van for a bit, then returning to finish off. Decided to swap out the s&r rig and have a storm jib made up, so will get underway the 2nd week of Sep, whether everything is finished, or not! Let me know where you're at in CR & the cousin of a friend may stop by to give you a hand with running around. The rest is in my pm. Nothing so wonderful as messing around in boats!

Mike

Seems like since we hit Panama all we do is regroup

Mike,

Where in Costa Rica is your friend? We will sail for Caldera, just south of Punta Arenas today to check in. We could drfinately need some advice for local knowledge. I am sure we could squeeze in a day sail for him for his help too.

I am still writing up the blog about the events. I will most likely post it on Wed when we get another access for internet. We're in this tiny bay getting free wifi, how cool is that!

Dot & John,

I am in the mood for some good BBQ, and great company. Not to mention a cold, very cold beer.........i2f

John and Mel, sorry to hear about the main and the 'crew'...... Glad to hear, however, that as usual you are taking it all in stride. Here's to a safe voyage and better times ahead!

Re: i2f in Panama . . . Again !

John,
I'm awaiting a response from my friend, Jenny. It's her husband's cousin who lives down there, but they're checking to see if he's there or in Canada & what his number is. I've also been talking to a guy who knows some of the same yacht designers/builders I know. He mentioned that a mutual acquaintance was living there, so I'll try to get that info. before I fly out to Vancouver tomorrow.
