Absolutely correct. Matauwhi sent me a PM, it is a bay on Moturua Island, easily identifiable on Google Earth. I know the bay but is so long since I have been there the name escaped me.

I need to make it out of the Northern Hemisphere my first year. As I said I can not leave until July and about a week further north than you. Most books say to keep out of the cyclone belt between Nov and March/April? I think, because of my dual citizenship I can stay in the Marquesas Islands which are within the 10 degree Equatorial safety zone talked about in the guides, plus they are far enough east to be considered safe.

As I arrive in August I would have 3 months of French Poly before moving North in the Marquesas for the southern storm season.

It's an idea at the moment rather than a plan.

I have a NZ cruising friend who kept on about the B of Islands. Thought he was Sounding off. Wow Frigging Beautiful. Definately on the Bucket List

I do not know what you mean by 10 degrees North or South. Do you mean the zones outside of the latitudes quoted (polewards) or the zone between them (equatorwards)?

I would rather look for a good spot to dodge bad weather. At least this used to be the classic definition of a Hurrican Hole ;-)

I did not meet any less friendly people in the Pacific, possibly because my boat is not a flash plastic toy. I did not feel very white out there either, you know - suntan ...

By Western (yachty) Standards standards we could be both dirt poor. You turn up in some South sea atoll you are the rich white guy!

From the reading I have done some of the Northern (equitorial) Islands are less than friendly and some down right ban yachts. Other areas are considered less than safe at the moment. Nadu point Marina in Fiji is can block the entrance channel is a great Western type marina and advertises itself as a safe haven. Having said that it is not a good thing to be out after dark in the local villages and towns!

So since the joy of a forum is finding otherwise unpublished words of wisdom, I was hoping that someone could say" I spent last Cyclone season at such a place, could moor the TiTanic, people where great and friendly, great produce , good cheap beer".

Have not heard that opinion. Cruising in the Palau area for the last 18 months have met many boats that have come thru Micronesia from Majuro. The only negatives have been that some of the islands are not good examples of a tidy picturesque paradise. Only Chuuk has been singled out with a negative because they have an overbearing bureaucracy - expensive formalities. On the bigger islands you are most apt to suffer indifference: they have been getting along fine without cruisers or the western influence. Have not heard of yachts being banned. However many small islands are essentially private. Permission must be asked before visiting. That might be described as a ban if they decilne ... as I might if my extended family (tribe) owned an island.
