Re: Great Barrier Reef.
Don't show those to Ove Hoegh-Guldberg or Terry Hughes.
Those pictures must have been photoshopped to hide the 95% of the reef that been bleached.

Re: Great Barrier Reef.
Thanks for the photos - we did not get as far north this year, so no reef diving or photos, but we did have an awesome time with the whales in Hervey Bay. Thanks for the memories.
Cheers Sue

Re: Great Barrier Reef.
StuM, very perceptive of you to know from a few pictures that the scientists that study the reef in detail are wrong. What an open and perceptive mind you have.
An interesting video with a real scientist.
Quote:
Terry Hughes from James Cook University in Queensland leads a taskforce measuring the condition of the Great Barrier Reef amid a global coral bleaching event that is ‘off the scale’. ‘The kind of bleaching we’re seeing now is an entirely modern phenomenon,’ he says. ‘We’re now in a very precarious position, where every El Niño that comes along, every five or six years, can potentially bleach the entire Great Barrier Reef’

Re: Great Barrier Reef.
Deep Frz,
I wonder if you have dived on the GBR recently.
These guys are posting pictures in real time.
There is a general concensus from many including many of tourist industry and users that the demise of the GBR has been way overhyped by those raising money for research as it was years ago with the crown of thorns scare.
I am not saying everything is perfect, we need to take care to properly manage the GBR. And teh GRB has a very well regulated and managed system under the control of the GBR marine parks authority. (GBRMPA)
You will note it seems the guardian.com only shows the GBR as a disaster zone and all is gloom and doom. Not one positive picture. What does that say to those of you on the other side of the world. The GBR is finished.
So I would not take its articles as the truth, the whole truth.

Re: Great Barrier Reef.
I was out there once in calm conditions and the dive compressor took a dump. By the time I got parts and back out, it was blowing a hoolie.

Re: Great Barrier Reef.
The worst of the reported bleaching is further north.
I too, have been enjoying this unseasonal calm for the last few weeks on the reefs between Innisfail and Cairns, and been to many the same spots as 44c. Conditions have been stunning. Over the last weekend, one morning it appeared that all the boat were floating in mid-air as the ocean we so clear and transparent.
But there have been extensive patches of dead coral covered in algae, with no obvious physical damage (like you would expect from a storm).
I'm not sure that the word of a tour operator is exactly impartial. They have a vested interest in this topic.

Re: Great Barrier Reef.
South of Cairns we saw very little evidence of bleaching. That's not to say there isn't any, the amount of reef we snorkelled is a tiny percentage.
From Cairns North, however, there is a LOT of dead coral. Places where coral was very good last year are dead this year. And there have been no cyclones in between.

Re: Great Barrier Reef.
The Guardian and Naomi Klein have labelled the climate disaster that is causing the horrible bleaching as inter-generational theft.
