Re: Gasoline and Propane on Pacific Islands ?

The moral of the story is to leave Panama with a minimum of 3 months supply of propane.

One of the many reasons I like kerosene is it's available everywhere either as straight hero or substitute odorless mineral spirits (paint thinner) and it's easy to carry a huge supply to last a year or so. We got a six month visa before we left for the Marquesas and used every day of it there and in the Tuamotus. Wished we'd obtained a years visa before leaving. We had a leisurely cruise while other boats had to rush to Papeete to renew their visa and refill depleted propane and gasoline. Our cruise is a bit of ancient history but the supply boats had limited capacity to carry propane and especially gasoline because of safety issues. Gasoline was virtually unobtainable as the ships only carried enough to supply the local population. Propane was a similar but not as dear. Times have changed but it still sounds like propane and gasoline are a problem in the remote islands.

If you are the typical cruiser rushing through the outer islands to get to the big city, gasoline and propane probably won't be a big issue. If you like to stray off the beaten path and linger along the way, it could be another story.
