Friends Meeting Us In Galapagos - Which Airport ?

Hi:

Which Galapagos airport should me friends fly into? We'll be there on our 44' catamaran, and we hope to go the four of us on a chartered (local) tour.

Any/all advice appreciated.

St Cristobal has direct flights from Ecuador.
Good anchorage, nice town, good access to tourist services, sea lions everywhere; the charter boats all leave from there or drop in...
Just don't like the name of the bay: Wreck Bay! Otherwiase known as Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

This is where your visitors would sit and wait for you!

Travel to the Galapagos Islands is very restricted. Some islands cannot even be stepped on. Some require you to have a national park guide with you at all times. There are only like 180 or so legal guides there, so you have to make arrangements ahead of time. They will also charge you $100 dollars a head for a park permit just to enter the park, payable at the airport, in dollars. The currency of Ecuador is US dollars.

I was there 2 years ago and really liked the place. I spent a week on a tall ship called Alta. Beautiful sailing. But you have to remember at all times that this is a unique biological laboratory. Many accidental introductions of plants an animals have happened there leading to the destruction of entire island ecosystems. Each island is a unique story as far as evolution, geology, and human history. I chased a grape down the deck once that I had dropped, under the watchful eye of my guide. You don't want to risk putting anything onto the islands. The animals there are spectacular, and friendly. You can approach just about anything. There is a zoo and laboratory on the main island that is worth checking out. You can see "Solamente George" that last tortoise from one of the islands.

Contact the Eucadorean Park Service for info on getting a guide so you can walk some of the islands. Magnificent place.
