Good grief, they went out in open waters without any long range comms equipment or any emergency distress equipment! I think the skipper needs a lesson on what is required for ocean going trips.

That's an understatement! Makes the work of the Coasties more amazing.

I don't think long range communications are required for cruising. a plan if your steering fails Is good order. I sailed a bunch a years without epirbs and ssb. Seemed okay. Maybe someone was thinking good grief when they met me then but I never met anyone cruising who said that to me. I have all that stuff now it hasn't improved my cruising experience much. Hope I never have to use either in crisis. I can sail without them though.

This trip was not in what I would deem to be conditions that would require "long range communications equipment". They were aparently not out of mobile phone range as the skipper was able to call the Coast Guard and give them their location.

It did not appear that the crew were in any immediate danger.

To me this was a case of not being able to rig an adequate emergency rudder. Other than that, there is not much information in that story to go on.
