Fiordland, NZ Chartering

Hi there,

I'm down at the South Pole until mid-November. A scientist friend and myself want to charter a sailboat once we're off-ice as a way to decompress from the dark and cold. As the subject says, we'd like to explore Fiordland. I sailed from Lyttleton to Akaroa in January and had a great time.

Bare or skippered is ok with us. Would any of you have a recommended company or independent source for a boat? Thought I would check with the experts here before random posts on craigslist.

Re: Fiordland, NZ Chartering

About as much chance as RPSC being re-awarded the USAP contract. No official bareboat down there and no boat owners who would be prepared to risk their boats for anything unofficial. It is a VERY challenging place to sail and there may be some skippered charters down there but I'm not aware of any. A very good place for tramping (hiking) though and a hook up with a cray (lobster) fisherman will provide you with plenty of excitement.
Are you playing HF darts with Scott Base etc. or has that sort of thing been banned as well?

Positively, socially deviant.
