I need a cheap way to get from Fiji to New Caladonia.

Is anyone aware of a fery service or similar local service ?

Flights appear to be in the region of £1000. !!!

There is a cargo that visits Noumea (New Caledonia) and/or Lautoka (Fiji Islands) - Suva (Fiji Islands). You must go to harbour master and ask details.

Fiji - Port Vila around $200. Port Vila - Noumea around the same. Not sure where you get $1k. Go to Air Vanuatu or Air Pacific.
