Familiar with Barkley Sound?

Planning to spend June and July in Barkley and trying to decide which anchors to take.
Weight is an issue, so I can't take them all.
I'm assuming you don't find the muddy bottoms as on the East side of Vancouver Isl - so leave the plow anchor home?
Thanks in advance

Barkley sound is full of protected anchorages with good holding. I've used or been with others that have used all the major players (Danforth, Delta, Bruce) and no one has ever had any problems. It's a beautiful area and so far one of our favorites. With a couple of exceptions the anchorages are small so expect to be on fairly short scope and in some a stern anchor or tie is necessary to limit swing.

We'll be in Barkley for 3 weeks in July as well. Keep an eye out for Flexible Flyer and say "Hi".

Be sure to go up Pipestem Inlet to the end. If you are the first boat there, or someone just left, you can tuck in the little hole at the very end of Pipestem. Small water fall, bear watching on the beach every morning and we were entertained daily by a family of River Otters sliding down the hill just for the fun of it. The flat beach is littered with oysters, although it was closed due to red tide, a local boat was eating them. Caution I guess...

Rocks are always a possibility, so I would definitely take the Bruce or Plow as opposed to the Danforth..... Generally good anchoring though....

Are you still looking for the replacement Boat? We spent two years looking from Canada to CA and ended up buying our dream PNW boat in Nova Scotia. She is a Freedom 39 Pilot House and is moored in The Dalles. We are near making the decision to sell due to economic considerations and age. You can contact me @ Svspartan at msn dot com and I'll send you my Phone Number.

I have anchored in Barkley Sound about a dozen times - with a bruce. No problems. The Dreamspeaker folks have produced a guide to the West Coast of Vancouver Island which includes Barkley Sound.

A word of warning: this is a Van Isle 360 year. Check the schedule to see when they will invade Ucluelet. They will occupy much of the small boat harbour and tend to arrive at all hours. They have been known to party hardy.

Jackdale - thank you very much for that info. I will be as far as possible from Ucluelet as possible. No offense to them.

No offense. As I "type" this I am wearing a Van Isle 360 shirt from 2007. I have been around Vancouver Island 8 times, once once the Van Isle.

Do visit Ucluelet. The wharfinger, Steve Bird, is a great guy. It is a great place to provision (the Coop). Some wonderful little restaurants. The motel near the small boat harbour has a spa / fitness center - nice showers.

Try to get up to Hot Springs Cove. You can get in by boat or float plane.

We will most certianly be in Ucluelet a time or two as we can't maintain a long period with re-suppling. We are hauling our 26 foot sailboat to P.A. then heading out. Boat name is ONeonta - named after my wife. Also known as "She who must be obeyed".

And Cheechako - what kind of bear? Black I hope.

I'll probably regret giving up this secret...
You have got to check out Lucky Creek in the entrance to Pipestem.
Go up in the dink on a rising tide and bring your clothes to wash at the first waterfall. Then hike up. Lots of pools for swimming.
My favorite spot in the whole place.
