Cruising the Louisiades

We are planning on heading to the Louisiades Archipelago, we had been considering the rally, but is not running anymore.

We would be leaving from Cairns in September.

We would really appreciate any up to date info, we are particularly curious on where to clear in/out? As without the Rally, Misima appears not to be an option for formalities. Is Alotau the option most favoured? If so does anyone have an update on the security situation at Alotau?

We have looked through Noonsite, etc. Trying to get a feel for the current situation.

Yep, Alotau will be the best place to clear in. Security there is not a big problem - very friendly locals.

Re: Cruising the Louisiades

We cruised Louisiades (and other northern PNG islands groups) on our own in 2012 - truly awesome! PM your email and we can help with info, island contacts, track files, good trade items to bring, etc.

Re: Cruising the Louisiades

We cruised there in 2013, using some great information from Totem. We cleared in at Kavieng, after being in PNG more than a month and had no problems.

You are lucky to be going there! If you need any information (but Totem probably answered most) let me know.

Also, if you do plan to go we would love it if you could take some supplies to friends we made on Panasia and Panapompon. Ida destroyed most of their food crops and little aid has reached them. We can send you some money.

Enjoy, Jim

Ps you can look at pictures and stories about PNG on our website, www.tenayatravels.com

Re: Cruising the Louisiades

Go to Alotau.

We went on rally last year and was lead to believe Alotau was big problem for clearing in and out.

When we were there a boat cleared in and out of Alotau on route to solomon island and had no problems and also was able to fuel up a lot cheaper than misima. He also had nice time moving across to louisaide.

In hindsight if we were going again would leave from Townsville or Bowen. Very little distance extra but big improvement in angle of sailing. Very beam on from cairns.

You will love the experience oh to be sick of lobster again. Take plenty second hand shirts and pants full dresses kids cloths for trading. They are not big people so large is about the biggest required but on the other hand they will make do.

Next year we are going to Raja Ampat in Indonesia with a rally. You maybe interested.

Safe travels very jealous.

Re: Cruising the Louisiades

Quintessa - Raja Ampat is awesome. Often tough anchoring because deep. Many places protectedand no fishing (and actually observed unlike much of Indonesia). It is magic underwater. If you want track files / info, let me know.
